Going Gray

If only my ghost blogger would sleep

If only my ghost blogger would just sleep. It shows up and writes a blog post in the middle of the night. Every night. If it would sleep then I wouldn’t have to remember all the crazy things I should write about the next morning. You know the clever stuff – to knock your sheets off and keep your attention?

Let me tell ya, that ghost blogger writes some damn good stuff in the middle of the night while I can’t sleep.

Its thoughts just grow and grow. Until I have to pee. Then I drink more water so that I can help it repeat that thought looping technique several times.

Together we solve so many problems while creating more. Occasionally I intermix pleasantries like remembering adventures with family and friends. As well as time travels with aliens.

Am I the only one that solves the worlds’ problems overnight? As I toss and turn, I think about Copper who isn’t there to cuddle up with me. He’d grumble as I nudged him with my foot. I don’t miss that so much. His grumbles have been replaced with Dessy’s snoring.

After that, I doze until the ghost blogger lands once again onto the thing. The thing that should’ve vanished by now. It still scares the sheets out of some of us. If only it would give up its ghost and be gone!

Meanwhile, the blogger ghost thinks up a solution that might convince the masses. Like introducing a new way to catch viruses. Yeah, I like it, it might work?!

If everyone walked around with a little yellow sticky thingamajiggy sticking out of our mouths, instead of masks, we’d know that we’ve caught the blasted thing. And we could watch it cease to exist right before our eyes. We’d thrive as we survive.

Yeah, that’d be cool. Cool…or cruel? Perhaps we should patent the idea?

I’m guessing not? Especially if you’re a worrier like myself. I know ideas that stick take the big media to jump on board and spread it like wildfire. We know fame and fortune have not settled here in my office.

My ghost blogger can ramble on and on. Until I’m exhausted enough to fall back asleep. And occasionally I oversleep. Like today.

Last night, after I did all the world solving with it, I fell back asleep. Hoped that I’d remember all the other ideas I had thought of while tossing and turning. If only I could remember them now.

I fell back asleep because it was cool enough to induce sleep.

Oh, dear, I fear it may be time to turn on the heat? Nah, we’re waiting as LONG as possible to turn it on. Our pre-buy of fuel was way more expensive than in previous years. I wonder if there is gold in it?

Wait…when you saw the temps did you think the same thing that I thought?

If it’s that cool outside in the morning, that has to mean there’s frost on the tea house roof!? Yep, there was.

Whew, I’m glad I brought in my plants last weekend. The remaining flowers outside will give up their ghost and I’ll remove their remains this week. I’ll gather seeds for next year. Something to look forward to. Spring. If only winter could hold off a bit longer. I just finally got my fall decorations out.

I confess that lack of sleep is not good for my brain functioning or remembering what to write about. Tossing and turning throughout the night does wonders for witchy-looking hair, though. So I’ve got that going for me. I’ll let you use your imagination. No pictures are needed. I look nothing like my younger witchy version.

Lack of sleep provides limited energy for decorating. Good thing I gave most of my decorations away. All I have left are three little pumpkins and three little ghosts. They are new additions thanks to Mr.’s 3-D printer. Boom – decorating for October is done.

The Dubious MinimalistTM in me enjoys simple decorating this fall. It keeps me from stressing about ghostly appearances of the thing during daylight hours too. If only I could convince my ghost blogger to sleep at night. Once the Hunter’s Full Moon on October 20 passes, sleep-filled nights will come again.

PS – Do you solve the world’s problems at night too?

  1. Since I don’t have a blog, I am not thinking up blog topics when I lie awake. But in our house, we call that spinning. As in, I was spinning from 3 to 4:30 last night. And it does make for a tired morning! I find most things feel most frightening and intractable at that hour. Doom and gloom if you will. So I’m always happy to wake up and realize the world is probably NOT ending today. Phew.

It’s definitely getting cooler here, too, although we haven’t had frost yet. Warmer by the lake is a real thing, I guess. At least at this time of year. But I am ready for the down comforter…if not this week, next week for sure. Our heat isn’t on either. We’re stubborn that way. 🤣

    1. Hi Laurel, great to hear from you. I often think a blog written by you would be a huge hit! I love it that you call sleeplessness spinning. That’s how I feel too. I think that’s the same time I was spinning for the second round. Yes, the fear feelings or anxiety sure intensify during those hours. And when a cat jumps on the bed at the same time I’m spinning with thoughts, the terror escalates. LOL! Dessy’s arrival and the morning light are a relief that the world isn’t ending. On a side note, she’s lost a pound since I’ve been devoting more time to her.
We had frost again last night. But, it’s a degree warmer in the house, so we still haven’t turned on the heat. I’ve heard that it’s warmer by the lake. Hard to believe with the winds that cross over the cold water. No extra blankets here yet, we’ll see if the blankets come out or if the heat gets turned on first. Says the lady who is sitting with her robe on and a blanket on her lap. Normally, I’m fine with turning the heat on. This year I want to take the challenge to hold out as long as possible.

        1. I forgot about that! We used to live by the lake and I just remember how cold it was when there’s ice on it. My brother lives just 3 miles from us and is by the lake – we’ve been comparing notes about how it’s frosty at our house and he doesn’t have any frost. One of these days there will be ice on the lake.

  2. Snow is coming your way very soon! Try not to walk on frosty grass, it damages the blades. I sleep just fine each night, just the occasional odd dream…

    1. Don’t swear, John. 🤣 I don’t want snow yet, but this week we will be getting some kind of precipitation. I didn’t walk on the grass, so it should be good for the bunnies this winter.
That’s great that you sleep well. I’m jealous!

      1. I sure do, the CPAP mask helps in a huge way. My family Christmas is in early December, gonna shake and shiver as always when I get off the aircraft! 🥶

        1. I have friends with CPAPs who say the same thing. Yay – glad you have plans for Christmas. It is a shocker to walk off the plane onto a ramp when it’s winter time.

  3. I’ve started to take a CBD gummy with melatonin before bed and it’s help a lot with my ghost blogger. I don’t miss him/her… I often found that “brilliant” ideas in the dead of night weren’t so brilliant in daylight. I do like your sticky yellow virus catcher though 🙂

    1. That sounds like a ghost blogger calming solution. I appreciate hearing that it works. I’ll have to look into it. 🤔😊
LOL – yeah, I do toss out a LOT of the brilliant ideas by forgetting them totally or laughing them off the next morning.
The yellow sticky idea works great for gnats. Those pesky things are a terror that came to life in the new potting soil I thought was going to help the plants grow. EVERY POT has its LOT of them. UGH. I confess to enjoy watching the yellow sticky tabs work. 😂

  4. I can relate. Love your little tea house, but why do you call it that? I want a little house to escape from the TV noise.

    1. It is my place to escape to during the nice weather months. It’s not insulated or heated. We do have a radio to listen to music, but other than that there’s no TV noise! My husband built it and designed it himself – after the tea houses in Japan.

  5. I know what you mean. Why are our night brains so active? Since we got our puppy, however, I haven’t been getting enough sleep, so when I do, I sleep hard. (Puppies don’t understand night owls who like to sleep in!) I returned from my literary conference in Ohio with a terrible cold–luckily not the other c-virus! So, now I’m trying to play catch-up while feeling down. I think the seven funerals and one wedding I sang in last month exhausted me more than I’d thought. Ever feel like you need a vacation after the vacation? A beach, maybe! (But someone else has to do all the laundry and pack and unpack!) Here’s hoping you get a little rise in temps before your steady decline into true cold. Our temps dropped a lot here over the weekend (but not like yours!). Here’s hoping for restorative sleep for you and all the good thoughts at all the right times, my friend!

    1. I’d like to know how to recharge my brain after it works so darn hard. Some days it takes almost until the next time to go to bed to feel like I’m not in brain fog. Ah, yes, puppies are great alarm clocks.
Aw, sorry to hear about your cold. Glad it’s not the other thing. I think you’re right about the way we respond to stressors – a vacation from a vacation is fun when you’re not sick. I hope you’re feeling better now! And if you have gotten caught up, send your recipe on how you did it? I’ve never figured that out 🤣🤔😊
We had lovely weather for the last two weekends, frost at nights though. And we finally decided to turn on the heat.
I did get some nice sleep, then some more not so nice sleep. The cooler temps at night have been good sleeping weather though.
Thanks for stopping by to share your thoughts dear friend – it’s always a pleasure to hear from you. xoxo

  6. I don’t solve the world’s problems at night, but I do tend to “work” on writing projects. Sometimes, I will make notes, but I avoid trying to actively write anything. I try not to stay awake to long. Hang onto those patent -worthy ideas though.

    1. I have a hunch that your creative mind is writing stories no matter what you’re doing! You’re right, it’s important to not stay awake too long in the middle of the night.
I’m making a list of patent-worthy ideas that will become a joke book for a tabletop someday. 🤣😂

  7. Shelley – I usually drift off pretty quickly, especially on a day I’ve done a long walk and I have to say that no matter what was on my mind when I went to bed, it has never kept me awake. Same for not losing my appetite, no matter what worries are on my mind. I’m blessed for that, but, last night I went to bed and heard a big thump shortly after drifting off. Was it the door? A window? People cannot get in due to the metal roll-up blinds and there is a front pole sensor light and a sensor light at the side door … still, my nerves were on edge. Nothing more became of it and I fell back to sleep. Nothing looked amiss outside this morning. I have the heat set at 71 and I am cold right now. I’d be an icicle at 66. Maybe on a weekend, when I’m not sitting in place hours on end. You two are real troupers. Mr.’s decorations are very cute. I am going to start decorating again when I’m retired … I did not even put up the Fall wreath yet this year. It didn’t feel like Fall and it was so humid every day, I was concerned the bittersweet berries would get damaged on the wreath, so the door is like a “Plain Jane” this season.

    1. You’re lucky that you drift off and stay sleeping. Yikes – those loud thumps disturb me too. Glad nothing came of yours. Most of the time our noises are the cats chasing each other or Dessy thudding onto/off the bed, but occasionally we’ll hear other sounds that make us wonder if we should go outside and investigate.
We did finally turn on the heat, but we’re trying to keep it 68 and under for as long as we can stand it. 65 at night while we sleep.
Stay warm, stay well-rested, and stay safe while you’re out walking!
I just finally cleared off everything on my front door step. I’ve got the “Plain Jane” look going too.

      1. Lots of things that go bump in the night. My friend has a cat that monopolizes the bed and when her husband first retired (after working out of state for three of four years and only getting home when the plant was on the annual shutdown or at Christmas/New Year’s that cat would resent David sitting in “its chair” – if her husband got out of the chair, that cat would take a flying leap and land on the chair to thwart David sitting there again – nervy!! I turned my heat to 72 yesterday. It was very chilly in here and I got my Moderna booster shot Saturday morning and by evening I was getting chills from the shot – it was not as bad as the last time, 24 hours after I got the #2 shot. I’m better now though.

        1. Cats can be territorial. I think I remember you mentioning your friend.
It’s funny, in the summer we like the A/C at 78, but in the winter we’d be sweating at that temp. We’re competing with each other to see who caves first for the furnace to be bumped up. So far the score is tied and we’re at 68 during the day and 65 at night.
I’m glad you’re better now. Take care and stay warm.

          1. I have the A/C at 77 until it gets really hot, then put it to 76. That’s because I sit in one place all day and don’t move around much, so it does get cold. So who will cave first? Stay warm – a real fireplace would be nice. I have an electric one, but it doesn’t give off warmth, just creates a little ambiance.

          2. I go between sitting and standing and my desk is right next to where the heat blows in my room. Mr.’s office is on the lower level of the house on the north side so he has a space heater. I think we’ll keep the competition going just for fun. With the cost of fuel skyrocketing we have more motivation to chop down another dead tree in the yard and burn wood instead.
Stay warm, and keep a blanket handy!

          3. Oh, that’s great you have a fireplace – that would give me some comfort to have a backup in the event of a power outage in the Winter. My boss had a power outage two years ago and they had no power for five days in March due to an ice storm. They also have a fireplace, so they just slept and spent their time in the living room. I have actually bought a couple of sleeping bags in the event of a power outage – I am worried about the pipes though.

          4. Yes, the fireplace has come in handy a couple of winters when we’ve lost power or the furnace has gone out. Good thinking to get extra blankets! We worry every year about freezing pipes, especially in our rental properties. It has happened more than we like to remember.

          5. I wish I had gotten an all-house generator instead of the all-house insulation back in 2017. Today it was very cold in here – hopefully they didn’t blow air though they made such a mess downstairs and in the garage. You are lucky to have the fireplace to warm the pipes and yourselves.

          6. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that neither one of us needs a generator. I think your all-house insulation was a great investment. You haven’t needed the generator in all the years, and I bet it has helped somehow? If they did it right.

          7. I hope you are right Shelley. At least it’s not an electric water heater so I can run the water non-stop for the pipes, which I usually do on the really frigid days.

          8. Hopefully I don’t need them. I just took the big camera out this morning. We had so many storms this Summer, that I put it in a seldom-used closet that has a ton of stuff that had to be moved to get to it. I have lots of clutter to get rid of when I’m not working anymore, but I wanted it to be safe. I’ve not used it since June.
