How to simplify your blog topics

From a cat’s perspective, here’s the thing about hoomans and their picking of a blog topic for the day.

Hoomans make it WAY more complicated than it has to be.

“The whole of life is but a moment of time.  It is our duty, therefore to use it, not to misuse it.” – Plutarch

Seriously…I’m not kidding you!

Hoomans, huff, and puff, as they type away at their computers.  They delete their words as fast as they type them.  Especially when they notice that adorable little ‘g’ Grammarly thing.   They want it to look all happy like this.

When it looks like this…

all I hear is sighs and pounding of keys, “Why, oh, why does it auto correct when I want to say a hooman instead of a human, I just wanna be politically incorrect sometimes…?”

Ahem…it’s a good thing for Grammarly, though, the world has enough literacy issues!

Seriously though, topics are everywhere.  Take clouds for example.

They come and go and are fascinating as they form different colors of gray with the arrival of a storm.

Hoomans can write about how they felt as they watched the clouds roll across the sky, or how they enjoy watching the evening skies change from light to dark.  Or complain about how they wish their camera could catch the stars at night.  A longing for what is out of reach is most definitely a touching topic to write about.

Hoomans are always busy doing something that they can write about.  They think I’m naughty or lazy as I sit (lay) where I shouldn’t and watch them…

but I’ve noticed a time or two when they are in the middle of something important, stop and grab their black handheld object and get sidetracked.

Sometimes they even leave the room with plenty of unfinished business and doors open for me to investigate.

If it were up to me, from a cat’s perspective, I’d write about seriously happy moments.  Like the day when Mr. took this loud-a** machine outside on the deck to clean the rugs instead of doing so inside.  It is scary when he uses it inside the house…!

IMG_8076csskrupa

I love those freshly cleaned rugs – holy heaven when they came back inside that day, all fresh with scents of the world outside, it was a sensational day in my world.  I imagined myself out there on some wild adventure.

Those topical moments are exhausting.  All I need is a nap after that.  Add a little sunshine, and a cat will lay down to take a nap, don’t ya know?   Busted…

All the hooman needs to do is sneak carefully around the corner, and boom, snap the almost perfect shot.  A mid-rollback yoga pose is kinda cute if you ask me…!

IMG_7998csskrupaI mean, a cat posing for the camera is all a hooman really needs for a topic to write about.  I tell ya, hoomans make it way more difficult than it has to be!  Ahem…what are you waiting for…go write!

Post inspiration – #MyBlogMyWritingStyle 30 Day Blogging Challenge (rules here), word prompt – Topics, the question of the day – “How do you find topics to write about?”  Photography prompt today thanks to Frank Jansen at Dutch Goes the PhotoLight and Dark, and, thank you too, to our cat, Dessy (and mugshot of sister Tizzie) – she enjoys making special writing appearances.

PS – What topics do you avoid?  What topics do you think are safe to write about?  What topic did you think was going to be successful, and it bombed?  Do you ever have your pets write posts…?  Share a favorite topic post in comments, I love invites to read your blogs!

  1. Cats rule everything and their thought control over hoomans is evident in your post Shelley. Would you have written this if the cats didn’t pose and make you want to write about them? I looked for a real cat in the kitchen and hoped it was licking plates clean in the dishwasher.

    1. Yes, Brian, they do rule everything! Dessy’s activities often trigger thoughts for posts, I just like to share her thoughts only once and awhile as a surprise. Dang…your keen sense of how to set up a photograph wins! I admit to being busted for not quite getting a great shot…it would’ve been a better picture with her licking the plates!! 😉

  2. I think it’s fun to read posts “written” by pets. Well done! I don’t have any pets (yet–my boys are working on me) so I guess I just need to summon my alter egos!

    1. Aw, thanks, glad you enjoyed it. I’m sure a discarded toy, or a pile of clothes, or a door left open leading to a creative disaster may spark some creative writing moments for you! You’re very creative in your writing, your posts always inspire me to keep writing!!

  3. Wonderful Post Ms Shelley … impeccable photography and a remarkable look into a cat’s prospective. And … there are a lot of times when sneaking around the corner shortcuts a cat’s impatience with our compulsion to always be poking a camera in their face. An amazing fun start of the day. Thank you for my morning smile. g

    1. Aw, g, thank you! We are happy to have brightened your morning! I think of my Dessy as a chubby (aka, redundant fluff) version of Kat – they are both adorable in their own way! 🙂

  4. LOVED you post written by your cat as hoomans are so human sometimes. Did I ever write from m y pets perspective?? I wrote an entire book from the perspective of all the dogs I had as a kid including the neighborhood dogs. It was a blast to write giving me complete freedom to be creative. You cat is beautiful by the way.

    1. Thank you, Anita, glad you enjoyed it! I know you’re a dog lover, so it was risky for Dessy to take the lead on the post…she loves fans as much as our dog does, so she’ll be purring over the praise you’ve sent her way. What’s the link to your book…is it for sale so readers know how to buy it??!

  5. This was wonderful to read. Having black & white interspersed with the color photos added an extra layer of perspective. I’ve never owned a pet so haven’t written from a pet’s view. But what a great idea. It is hard to know what topics are safe to talk about. It depends on how concerned we are with readers liking or not liking (?) a certain topic. I wrote a number of posts about the process of downsizing – I figured alot of baby boomers will be doing that. Not sure if they were “found” but(!) it was fun to write them. So that was my favorite post topic in my blog’s beginning.

    1. Thank you, I appreciate your feedback! Yes, topics that are interesting to you as the writer will be interesting to someone! Try reposting one of your favorites to see the response now that you’ve grown in your blogging career. I’ve never been able to figure out the reblogging thing or copying a blog…so if you do, let me know! Downsizing is definitely a hot topic!
