Ah, to be a dog for a day

I wish I could be a dog for a day.  Dogs have it easy.

For one, they can do a perfect down-dog yoga pose.  I’ve yet to master the technique.  I don’t know why either, I just struggle with that pose.

For another reason, dogs can take a nap in a moment’s notice.  Awake one minute, asleep the next.  I love naps.

Let’s see, what else dogs get to do that humans don’t?  They can walk about the yard and know that invaders have been to their space.  Like pesky voles and rabbits, too.  They don’t have to rake the mess left behind.  I need to add that to my to-do list by the way.

Dogs can chase birds, instead of watching them from the window like a cat has to do.  No one in our family catches any birds.  But they find chasing and watching entertaining ways to spend the day.

Dogs appreciate help from humans, up to a point.  Then the help probably becomes more of a hindrance.  But they never complain.  They just walk around it.

A fence keeps a dog safe from wandering off into the wet grass as the winter melts away.

They wait patiently.  Because they know someday soon we’ll be out there…

Out where the world seems even bigger than the fenced in yard.

That same dreary looking yard that has reappeared out from under the snow will transform again.

Once it all melts, and spring sprouts, there will be the freedom to roam in the green, green grass.  And run and play and enjoy the day…especially in the grass that the humans keep mowed.  A dog never has to mow the lawn.

Ah, yes, to be a dog.  Just for a day.  To sniff and picture the world around them.  Soak up the sun and every precious thought of what it is they smell, all in one moment of time.

Yep, I’d be a dog for a day…

PS – If you could be an animal for a day, what animal would you chose to be and why?  Are you surprised that we still have snow on the ground?  If you do yoga, can you do down-dog pose without a problem?

  1. I’d be a bird so I can see the world below. Not surprised to see snow there still Shelley. It was incredibly deep!

    1. I could see that about you. Makes me wonder if you have a drone camera? Yeah, we’ll have snow through the end of April, maybe, probably!

  2. Yes, they do love naps and can fall asleep easily. I envy them for that. I’m glad to know snow is already melting. Have a great day, Shelley!

    1. Yay, a fellow nap lover! Hope you take time to nap, you’re a busy mom! Yes, snow is melting, slowly. Hope you have a great day, Winnie!

  3. There’s a reason they say it’s a dog’s life. 🙂 Our dog is expert at finding sun puddles and napping in them. I love that idea, too, but have waaay less time for it than he does. He’s getting older now, but when he was young he had endless energy and I always envied that, too. He’s also a beautiful chocolate brown color with natural red highlights in summer. And being a rescue, he really lucked out when we adopted him – two doting adults and all the attention he can bear. Ha! All in all, he hit the jackpot!

    1. Oh, yes, your dog has hit the jack pot – sounds like he’s found the perfect home with you!!! Sounds like your smitten with him too ;-), which makes life all the better.

  4. Our dog just decided to sleep in this morning. “I’ll pee later” seemed to be her response when we tried to take her out. I would love to be able to do that.

    1. Soon, you’ll have more control of your time. I sense there will be moments of ‘watch out Maddie – Dan’s retired, and the schedule may just need to adjust for all?’ 😉

      1. They all (The Mrs, two cats and Maddie) seem to be urging me out the door in the morning. I’m not sure how this retirement thing is going to work.

    1. LOL – I love how you have the gift of being able to quantify the situation before committing to it. So, yes, for you, Ally, I believe you should get to pick the day. 🙂

  5. What a great idea! YES!!! I would be a dog for a day. I would get unlimited belly rubs and explore the backyard. Chase the feral cats away and pee to mark my territory.

And down dog is inaccessible to me – tight runner’s calves and hamstrings make it almost impossible.

    1. I can tell you love dogs too! You’ve added great ideas to the perfect dog day!
Oh, my, maybe that’s my problem with down-dog. I don’t run like I used to, but that pose pulls exactly where you described. I have a marathon runner friend who teaches yoga, I think I need to ask her for help. I’ve just been too embarrassed at not being able to do the pose everyone seems to be able to do! Thanks for the connection on why it may not work for me!

  6. My husband and I always say we’d like to come back as one of our cats. We’d be well fed, well petted and able to sleep in the sun all day.

  7. Our dog usually goes from the downward facing dog yoga pose right into a nap on the floor or his doggy bed. It’s amazing to watch. He is 12 years old, so he is completely entitled to dropping into a nap at a moment’s notice. 🙂 Growing up, we had a pure-bred Siamese cat that would catch birds. He would usually leave them, along with his mouse offering for the week, at the back door. Apparently he thought my dad wasn’t doing enough to provide for the family. 😉

    1. LOL – my dog is around that same age. It is amazing how they can go so quickly into a nap pose! I love watching Siamese cats on the prowl. LOL – a hunter with gifts, so fun!
Since our cats are inside cats, I don’t miss the yard treasures we used to get when we had a couple cats outside. Thank you for sharing your thoughts 🙂
