How reflecting on a beach motivates me

I write every day (almost).  Flushing out a blog post in the morning has become a habit.

One I actually love doing.

Don’t wait.  The time will never be just right. – Napoleon Hill

But, not today.  For some reason, I just stood here (yeah, I have a standing desk, duh, so I stand) and froze like a still life photograph.

I froze…I didn’t want to write.  WTH?

I don’t know why…?

Either I will find a way, or I will make one. – Philip Sidney

I think it’s because my desk is dusty, my thoughts are rusty, and I still have dooming piles of paperwork left on my desk from Friday.

And my &#*@*^! book-keeper (aka, me) didn’t finish tax prep over the weekend…and now it’s Monday

And I’m heading into another week of January.  Holy smokes this month is flying by fast!

It is paradoxical but profoundly true and important principle of life that the most likely way to reach a goal is to be aiming not at that goal itself but at some more ambitious goal beyond it. – Arnold Toynbee

As I admire my handiwork of scattered organized piles everywhere and the state of things here in my office, I guess my freezing has to do with time in reflection instead of production.

And overwhelming disappointment in not keeping up with things throughout the year is depressing as hell.

Now, to make things worse, I finally noticed I need to add a dusting task to the bullet journal (which BTW I haven’t been extremely successful at keeping up with either…! Sigh…!)

As I look at my dusty reflection in the mirror…

I smile, though, there are reminders and small glimpses of hope circling around in my thoughts.

“Duh – Shelley – notice the all the seashells…your beach trip is getting closer and closer each passing day…”

Hang on baby, the trip will be here soon enough…breath, just, breath…

AWednesday 149

and the rewards of hard work and dedication will be your toes in the sand and probably, most likely a tropical cocktail in hand.

Ah…a fairy tale dream of sitting on the beach, that’s true motivation for me!

PS – What are your tricks for staying motivated to write?  Are you keeping up with your resolutions for the year or catching up from not doing so the previous year?  I hear know it happens?

  1. Love the pictures of you and your hunny by the beach. The last one in the frame is terrific. Thanks for the kind words about my blog.

  2. I totally relate to this post. I spent yesterday afternoon DUSTING and wiping down my writing room, as I call it. Combined all those scraps of paper to-do/idea lists into one. And actually DID a few of the things listed. So now the computer, my desk and the bookshelves are clean. I see empty space! Motivation to write happens more easily in a dust-free clutter-free (or at least less cluttered) area. For me anyway. (maybe yesterday’s efforts should have been my New Year’s resolution…would have taken care of it. LOL). How exciting for you to have that trip to look forward to 🙂

    1. LOL – thank you for sharing your dusty story with me ;-)! You’re way ahead of the game by having met all your new year resolutions! I’m envious 😉 Yes, the future trip is keeping me motivated. 4 years between trips is too long…………….!

  3. This is why I always start a to-do list with a few items that are already done. Crossing them off, and seeing a few items on the list being crossed off, always helps.

  4. While you are living in the reflection of recent past reflect on how fabulous your life has been. The picture of you and Mr. is absolutely refreshing. You are both so happy and in love. Its awe-inspiring. I never had that but I don’t begrudge what I did have because I would not have what I now have. You have 2 beautiful children that are on there own but you did that. beautiful you and beautiful Mr. created 2 other beautiful people and thats a lot to reflect on. Good job. Oh, and don’t worry about the dust. I saw a thing on FB that I think I will live by …until I just can’t. “Man came from dust and he will go back to dust. I will no longer dust as I may be moving someone to the trash can.” Have a great day.

    1. Aw, thank you! We count our blessings every day. Love and perseverance have held us all together over the years. I agree it is important to treasure what we have now at the moment, too, it’s nice to be reminded of that though, life gets busy at times. Oh, my, goodness, that’s hilarious! I may need to use that saying too! Hope you have a great day, too, Anita – I so treasure your blogging friendship!!

    1. Yes, the BK saga continues…and the piles just seem to replenish themselves, magically! Thank you, I’m addicted to the routine of writing in the morning. It brings me joy!

      1. You’re going to become a professional soon!! Hang in there. It may get easier and faster over time. And I wish I were addicted to your kind of writing routine. Would be so productive but that extra sleep just calls me…to press that snooze button. 🙂

        1. LOL – unfortunately, it is what I do (among a ton of other roles) professionally – probably why I don’t want to do it on my ‘off’ time! LOL – sleep is a good thing and restorative – I don’t blame you for wanting to stay in bed to catch zzzzzzs!

  5. Hmmm – I could write about the dust too Shelley. For me it is easier coming up with posts as they are based on my treks, or a memory from the past (usually around the holidays) but I have been stumped sometimes if I’ve not been walking in a while due to bad weather. I always did my posts the same day as they happened but since I’ve been incorporating more and more photos into my posts I’ve been splitting them up in to more management sizes – consequently have two sets of photos with narratives to write about. I do worry that I’d have too many days between posts though.
