Going Gray

Going Gray – 6 month mark is a perfect time to find a support group

Rumor has it, the 18th-month mark is the average finish line for most people.  Here I am at 6-month mark of going gray = 1/3 of the way to the finish line!   This is a shaky time for me.  I’ve found that finding support to keep going when you’re still early in the process is a great idea.

Remember, normal hair growth is a ¼ inch per month.

I’m excited to get to the 6-month mark, I think a party is in order?  But…not quite yet! I’m at 5 months, 23 days to be exact, so just ONE.MORE.WEEK.

Months 5 and 6 of going gray are a wild ride of emotions.  I’m guessing that is why people tend to cut off all the old hair and start fresh with cute pixie cuts.  It is so tough to wait patiently for the hair to spring into action and get on with the growing already.

Even though I’m excited to get to 6-month mark, I’m not going to lie, this phase of going gray seems sooooooo slow, just like winter in Wisconsin.  With curly hair like mine, the longer it gets, the more it bunches up the curls.  It seems like it is growing backward in length.

Curly hair plays tricks on your emotions!

In Wisconsin, March is a really long month.  One day is full of moments of warmth, and the next day it is cold and gloomy.  Last week it snowed here…again.  Just a few days after the previous week of snowing down on us a lovely 12 inches of white to cover the ground.  In less than 5 days, the snow is all gone.

Winter in Wisconsin, like curly hair, plays tricks on your emotions!  March weather is a wild card for what you’re going to get.

I know my hair has grown.  Darn it, not fast like 12 inches in one day due to snowy weather.  But I can see growth in the mirror when I stretch the hair out.  I’m even able to curl some of the hair on the sides now to have them sparkle around my face.  It definitely helps with the demarcation line to be able to pull in silver in other areas around my head rather than just the top of the head.

Almost 6 months…it’s not fresh and fun and…I don’t know what to call it…maybe it’s boring?

Oh well, I’m still not ready to cut off the old hair.  I kinda like the hair on my neck to keep the chill of Wisconsin’s weather at bay.  This past week, the emotions hit me a bit.  Looking for something to boost my spirits, I stumbled upon advice to join a support group.  Yay, now I can see if there are others out there who are feeling the same way at this stage.  You know, just to feel “normal” for wanting to go gray.

So, I joined a Facebook group called “Gray and Proud”.  It is a private group, so thankfully, they accepted.  Good graycious…silver friends with words of wisdom and inspiration to help each other keep on keeping on!

Ah,…just the refreshing boost needed at this stage.  I’d highly recommend joining if you haven’t!  If you have any other tips on what to do to boost your spirits at this stage, I’d love to hear your comments!
