Emptying the nest

For 10 years I had a bright idea to revive a lamp

10 years ago I had a bright idea.  Yikes, that’s painful to admit…for 10 *&#!*!! years, I’ve had this lamp, and haven’t been using it.  Things have finally changed, though.

Silly ol’ me.  You know me, I love yellow things – yellow shirts, yellow belts, and yellow walls, and this yellow lamp.  With delicate pink and yellow rose petal flowers.

That must have been what drew me to the lamp in the first place?

For some reason, I fell in love with the damn antique lamp.  My family has questioned my decorating judgment ever since.

It was in my mom’s home when we cleared the space to sell it.  I don’t know the history of it.  I wish I did.  I can’t find anything about it on the internet either.  I think it is ceramic, but that’s just a guess?  All I know is that I just couldn’t part with it.  I had to find a way to incorporate it into our home.  Someday.

Oh, I tried to part with it, at multiple different thrift sales.  I always priced it really high, so that it would be worth it to part ways. The gold leafing on it, and the gold bottom must indicate it is worth its weight in gold…sigh.  I try.

But it never sold.  Maybe the yellow bug lightbulbs or the lack of a lampshade was a deterrent?  Mr. thankfully helped me replace them.

So, the damn thing had been taking up space in our garage.  Not on our library shelf, but back in the corner, tucked safely away.  While it waited patiently for a lampshade.

I finally found one at IKEA.  It’s not a perfect one, but it matches the other lampshades I have in our bedroom.  Matchy, matchy is the way to go.

Is it eclectic, you bet?  That’s me – an eclectic decorator.

But, the truth is, it’s a new hot trend – and yellow and gray go fabulously together!

And that’s how I’m finally, a hip and happening kind of empty nester – after 10 years in the works.  Just in time, all I needed to do was revive a lamp.

Post Inspiration – A month of independence from unfinished projects.

PS – Do you have a favorite color?  Yellow, I hope?  Would you have priced the lamp lower to part ways sooner?  Do you think I’m on the right track of it being an antique ceramic lamp?  Or was it a Dollar Store or K-mart knock-off?!

  1. I wasn’t up on the paint trends until recently, and so was unaware of the popularity of gray and yellow. The painter doing my kitchen showed me the yellow paint from his last job – there were remnants of it in his paint bucket – it was bright daffodil yellow, so bright I could hardly look at it! It was going on an accent bathroom wall. I guess it would make a dramatic statement?!

  2. It’s a very nice lamp Shelley, keep it. My fav color is blue! I’ve no idea if it’s ceramic but it’s a keeper.

    1. Thank you, John :-)! Blue is a lovely color, it’s one of my other favorites – it goes well with yellow too!

  3. I know nothing about antiques, but I know if you love something you should enjoy it! My favorite colors are bright orange/red and turquoise, but I tend to use them more in my wardrobe than my decorating. Most of our stuff has moved toward the color of dirt to accommodate our dog. Kidding. Sort of…

    1. Aw, those colors are bright and cheery like you. I wish I had more of them in my wardrobe. LOL – don’t get me started on the color of dirt, 3 pets later most definitely has something to do with that! 😉

  4. oooo – I like blue- and some yellows and gray – and love how you had the word play – bright idea – hahhah

  5. Something is tugging at you to keep this lamp – for sentimental reasons if nothing else. (I highly value the sentimental). So keep it! Some divine intervention kept it from selling at thrift sales. Polish it up and give it a place of honor. One of a kind.
Yellow is such a positive color. It does happen to be a favorite of mine too 🙂

    1. Thank you for your encouragement. It’s a one of a kind, just like me ;-).
With your upbeat personality, I could see yellow being a favorite color of yours!

  6. My favorite color has always been brown and I love the harvest colors for their shades of brown, ochre, burnt orange … and the smells of harvest time … why even a pumpkin pie could be a shade of brown right?
