A movie date with my dog

The best date ever is with a handsome older guy who loves me unconditionally. No offense to my other Mr. in my life. He’s an older guy too, and a great catch at that, but he’s not like going on a date with my dog.

My dog, Copper, he’s a charmer and he loves me unconditionally in a different way. He’s a great movie date.

He likes Chick Flicks!! 🙂

Hey Copper –

Yes, my dear, what can I do for you?

Do you wanna watch a movie with me?

You’re, serious, right, and not pulling my leg, are you?

No, not pulling your leg. So do you wanna watch one with me or not?

Ah, of, course, I do!  Which movie? Not Jaws again, I hope?

No, it’s not that one!

That’s good, I’m bored with that re-run. I could use a bit of a nap while we cuddle and you watch a movie.

Yes, you’ll be able to snuggle with me, in a blanket, downstairs, on the couch.

I’m listening…so what movie do you have in mind?

Shirley Valentine. It was recommended to me by my blogging friend, Cindi over at Diary of a Mad Retiree. She mentioned the movie to me in a comment a while back. I’m positive Mr. won’t be interested in it, it’s a chick flick. I have a copy of it, and I think you’d be the perfect companion to watch it with.

Aw, shucks, you know me so well!
Just let me wash up quick. Give me two minutes.

Are you ready yet? I’m so excited. Wanna watch the trailer first so you know what you’re getting into?

The trailer…pretty much covers most of the highlights!
Oy…the things I do for the other Mr.

Ready, set, let’s go watch the show!

Okay, I’m ready, dear, let’s go. Do you wanna carry me?

And off we went. To the show. And what did we I think of it?

Unlike Copper, who crashed right away and slept through the whole thing, I stayed awake the whole time. I do love that about him, he’s not like people at movie theaters who talk during movies.

I was essentially in my own movie theater.  I reclined the lounge seat, settled in with my main little man, and watched the entire movie.

It was funny. Not hilarious, but funny enough to keep me entertained. It was also serious enough to make me reflect on my own life.

Pauline Collins did an excellent job in her role. I fell in love with her character from the start. There was a good message to it, too. She’s 42 in the movie and tired of who she’s become in her life. And once she finds her old self again, she doesn’t want to let go of her or the way she acts in her new life.

I could relate to that. I remember my 40’s being an exceptionally hard time in life. I’ve never felt like running away to Greece, though. Hmmm….come to think of it, I had started running daily when I turned 40.

As I’m gearing up to turn 55 later this year, in my empty nesting life, I am wondering what I want or don’t want to do for my own health and sanity. I know I shall think often of this movie. Thank you, Cindi, I’m glad you recommended it.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Ah…I just noticed there’s another movie that Pauline is in, this one she’s in it with Joan Collins. I wonder if they are related somehow?

Yes! I’m excited. I definitely see another chick flick movie date in the future. I wonder when it will be out on video? While Copper is the perfect movie date, he’s not allowed in the movie theaters! And I’m pretty sure it’s not still out in the theaters, being a movie from 2017! Oh, my, I’m wondering if I do I need to get out more?!

PS – Have you seen Shirley Valentine? If so, what do you think of it? Are you go to the theater type or the type to stay at home and watch movies? Do you snuggle with your pets when you watch movies? Have you checked out Cindi’s blog before?

    1. Yes, sometimes they are! Thank you, Copper appreciates the kudos – he’s been practicing his movie poses for YEARS!

  1. I’ve never seen the movie, great photos of Copper! I’m four years ahead of you, I’ll take 55!

    1. Thanks, John, my Mr. is 4 years older than me too! I’m thankful to be saying I’ll be 55 – I still can’t drive 55 on the highway either…! LOL

      1. Thanks again! Nice wordplay on Sammy Hagar’s 1984 hit! Who still drives 55 on any highway? That reminds me of the big Gas Crisis of the 1970’s I think?

        1. Yep! I think I’ll play that song all day on my birthday! I rarely see anyone drive 55 nowadays. Now that’s a flash from the past that I may have been a bit too young (4 years younger than you) to remember the crisis being something to pay attention to. 😉

          1. I was very young too but old enough to remember the goings on which today I realise was such a joke. This is where we get into the political BS. Our feds in Washinkton and the tree hugger groups are driving our fuel prices sky high. There is zero reason for the high test I use in my truck to cost almost four dollars per gallon. We have plenty of oil under our own ground! I recall when gas was less than one dollar in the 1970’s. 😡

          2. I don’t disagree with you! And I do remember my history teacher telling us that gas would be over $1/gallon by the time we drove and that we should all buy bikes. Gas is $2.84 here. $4.00 is crazy!

          3. The price difference is because A) the cost of living here is certainly higher, and B) I run the High Test (91 octane) as the engine has a mild spark knock on anything less and just runs noticeably better too Shelley. The lesser octane fuels are also more expensive here than your prices.

  2. I don’t remember if I saw that movie! In 1989 I was knee deep in little kids so probably not at the time (or if I did, too sleep deprived to remember LOL). No dog here to cuddle – you describe a very cozy scenario though, lucky you :). And I agree – I also do not appreciate people talking during a movie!!
    Have a great Sunday!

    1. LOL – you might’ve run off if you had watched it at that time. I was just getting married that year, so I wouldn’t have enjoyed the message of it at that time in my life. Happy Saturday to you – PS, thank you, I’ve got Rock Steady stuck in my head now…! 😉

  3. I haven’t seen either of those movies and don’t remember hearing about them but they look cute. I remember Pauline Collins from her days on Upstairs Downstairs which I used to watch all the time. Thanks for sharing them.

    1. Thank you for sharing – I’ll have to look up the show Upstairs Downstairs. I like the way she delivers her lines.

      1. It was a great PBS series in the seventies or early 80’s. I didn’t watch the sequel though so I must have been married by then. The hubs is not a fan of that kind of stuff. Now I can watch things like that on Netflix while I’m in the Studio crafting!

  4. Copper is adorable and you got great shots of him in all his glory! They do make the best movie companions. Aero lounges on the back of my chair (where my cat used to) while 52-pound Brodie curls up next to me with his hot self and snores while we enjoy an evening of TV. Glad you could share your love of dogs, Shelley!

  5. I loved Shirley Valentine … what a wonderful movie! Independence and a stubborn (determined) case of free will. Grand. g

  6. This is a great post about your little man Copper. You got some great expressions of his impressions and washing up before you went on your date – LOL. What kind of dog is Copper Shelley?

    1. Thanks, Linda. Copper puts up with me and my camera, he’s a good dog. He’s a Pomchi (his dad was a black fluffy pomeranian and his mom a golden chihuahua – so I was told). He’s perfect in my opinion, even if he’s getting old and hates to have his nails clipped. But he’s a great movie date.

      1. I don’t think I’ve ever seen that mix Shelley and I thought he was bigger than a chihuahua, so I’m guessing his height and size comes from the Pomeranian then. I didn’t know Pomeranians were black either. That was news for me. Late last year I saw a Bouvier at Heritage Park – I have heard of the breed but never saw one in person.

        1. Yes, he’s small, smaller than Dessy and Tizzie, so he’s definitely the little man in the house. I never saw his parents in person, just pictures. He’s a nice mixture of them. I’ve never heard of a Bouvier either. They are HUGE compared to Copper. We had a 80# Golden Retriever – purebred, loved him, but he was a pain in the ass arrogant test the waters kind of dog. Too smart for his own britches. But he raised Copper and so Copper thinks he’s a big dog of the house. It’s rather cute.

          1. I had no idea Copper was so tiny – your pictures are up close and I thought he was more the size of a terrier, even a beagle. That Bouvier was like a small pony. I had some pictures in my blog post of it – I think it was before you were following me. The woman’s name was Shelley and the dog’s name was Bo. I went and asked her what kind of dog it was – I thought it was some type of sheepdog, all hair and looked dirty as its face was a different color and it was eating snow or playing in it so was very wet around the face. That’s odd having a Golden with an attitude – they are usually so docile, maybe due to the cats or did you have Dessy and Tizzie then? My friend’s Golden knocked her down as he was excited to see a puppy in the yard and she hit her head on the steps and got a brain bleed. Doc said she was okay and then on March 4th she fell down and collapsed outside – she has several dogs as she is into tracking (her dogs plus judges tracking) and one of the dogs laid over her body two hours in the snow to protect her from freezing. She had brain surgery that day and just got out of the hospital on April 10th. Copper with a big-dog attitude sounds cute.

          2. Yes, Copper is tiny. He’s a great lap dog and we carry him when he’s too tired to walk. Our golden was headstrong and handsome. A bad combination for an alpha dog with a wimpy mom. I blame his challenges on my lack of experience in dog parenting. He was a good dog though. The cats came into our life about the time Nick went blind. He lived 2 years after that, so he never knew what they looked like, just that they smelled different from Copper. Oh, my that’s awful for your neighbor. Nick knocked me down once too – and I had a small fracture in my tailbone and a terrible headache. I was relieved of the task of taking him out in public without a heavy duty choke collar. Like I said, I wasn’t the best mom for an alpha dog. I hope your neighbor heals well.

          3. I never realized that Goldens were so headstrong – I wouldn’t blame myself if I were you Shelley. There might have been a temperamental issue with him in his parentage. My parents bought a poodle and he was AKC registered and all that and that dog was wild-like. He could not be trained. Would go in the yard and sneak under the fence by digging holes – he escaped one day and there were a couple of dogs loose in the neighborhood so someone on the next block evidently put out hamburger with rat poison in it. Peppy got hold of it and came home foaming at the mouth and had to be euthanized. Yes Ilene is doing better though she must be monitored as there is still some bleeding on the brain, despite the surgery. You look to be petite though – Ilene is about my height (5′ 9″) so she must not have been standing steady on the steps for him to do that.

          4. While I loved our Golden, I would never again buy a purebred of any kind. He was huge, and thought he was small and wanted to sit on my lap or pull me around. My little mix pup has been a complete joy and way healthier than our other dog. Oh, my, that’s horrible about Peppy. 🙁 Glad to hear Ilene is doing better.

          5. I have to agree with you on the mixed breed dogs Shelley. When I was young my parents bought a German Shepherd, Cocker Spaniel and then the poodle. All three of them had issues. The Shepherd developed hip dysplasia (common for this breed) and had to be euthanized; the Cocker Spaniel could not be housebroken and would be walked and come home and would squat and pee. My mom said we were not going to wait until he graduated to lifting his leg. He also dragged his ears through his water dish and food and then ran all over the house dripping water and food – my mom was pretty no-nonsense and the dog had to go. My aunt, on the other hand, had two Heinz 57 pups who were housebroken in weeks after getting them – they were perfectly obedient. We were obviously doing something wrong with ours so we switched to birds. 🙂
