A glowing tradition of naughty or nice?

I just think Christmas is a time to embrace all the naughty little things. – Jade Thirlwall

Post Inspiration – My childhood holiday decorations, remembering my mom setting them out and warning me and my brother not to touch them, and how much I miss her enthusiasm for her holiday traditional decorations, and Frank’s Tuesday Photo Challenge – Glow (more to come from me in a future post of mine on holiday light photography) and, of course, I couldn’t resist joining in on the fun over at Linda G. Hill’s One-Liner Wednesday!

PS – What childhood holiday decoration do you still set out year after year after year?  What decorations creep you out?

  1. It’s so sweet that you’ve had these cute pieces since childhood Shelley! Great photos, so much colorful bokeh!! ❤️

    1. Thank you, John! I haven’t had the heart to part with them, so I bring them out every year. Yes, I love Christmas light bokeh! So easy to do once you know how to do it!

  2. Such nice remembrances of your happy memories. I don’t have any decorations from my childhood – not sure why not – although I do have a large troll dressed as Santa. Not sure when that’s from – and it does border on creepy!!

    1. Thank you! I only have these because I had to clear out my mom’s house when she moved to assisted living. They are in a box containing her childhood ones too. I haven’t had the heart to part with them yet. Trolls are creepy… there’s a town in Wisconsin that has trolls everywhere. That’s really creepy. Did you put your creeper out for the season yet?!

  3. I don’t do any “elf of the shelf” stuff. Never have. There’s plenty of old-school decorations, though, I add slices of oranges to the tree.

    1. The ‘elf’ stuff was random at best. I just like him because he’s one of the original ones. The newer ones seem even creepier to me. Ah…we did dried oranges once when I was a child. Do you use other natural ornaments, or what’s the draw to oranges about?

          1. Make a sad face and share it on IG! 😉 I was sad to see that it only took you a week to catch up on your work. I took off two days and am still behind!

    1. We tried it one year, it was fun, but the next year, the kids weren’t so into it. It’s creepy. I love the charm of old decorations. The attention to tiny details impress me.

  4. Wonderful to have holiday-spirited decorations that remind you of your mom. Mine also loved to decorate for the holidays, and she made a kind of ceremony out of doing the tree, which I try to do with my kids. Fun!

    1. Yes, I agree. My mom loved to involve us and our kids in the decorating. She bought them an ornament every year. We did that too and have passed them on to them when they moved out so they can decorate their tree with them. I still have my mom’s first ornament of when she was a child and mine too. When I’m into being melancholy, I decorate with them. Your kids will love looking back on those happy decorating moments with ‘Mom’ too! It is fun – happy decorating to you!

  5. We have one holiday decoration: It’s a large ornament that my step-grandmother (Mom’s father’s second wife) gave my father when he was in the hospital. After Mom died, I called dibs on it. We don’t do anything else.

      1. It’s a large styrofoam ball that’s covered in gold glitter. It’s been scooped out and a winter scene is in there, and there’s a bow and a loop so you can hang it.

  6. I’m going to write about a little tradition I keep at Christmas in the coming week. I need to take some pics in the house first. I don’t have anything at the holidays that creeps me out, but that Grinch sure is an ugly fellow. We never had the tradition of the Elf on the Shelf when I was growing up – I’m guessing it was not a Canadian “thing”?

    1. Ooo…I look forward to seeing that post. Yeah, the Grinch is creepy. The Elf seems to come and go with excitement.

  7. Hello my dear Shelley, your Christmas decorations look so cute! We do miss our departed loved ones lots on Christmas, don´t we… my Grandma also had that profound love for Christmas and the Christmas-decorations…she used to ring a bell to gather us all in front of the tree when it was time for gift-giving, and when all the candles were lit on the tree and it was beautifully decorated. I have that bell sitting on display in my living room…and just went to a nearby pine forest the other day to gather some twigs etc to create a natural christmas/ winter-vibe at home. Thanks for connecting me with some very precious memories, dear! Many hugs and much love to you xxx

    1. Hi Maria! I’m so happy my decorations sparked happy memories for you. Your grandmother’s tradition sounds delightful. Thank goodness for grandmas who carry on traditions. I can just hear the soft ringing of the bell…so beautiful! Many hugs to you too – thank you for your recent journey you shared. WOW – so impressive!!!

      1. Shelley, they totally did. I agree so much – thank goodness for our beloved grandmothers and all the countless treasures they share/ shared with us!
