A Friday stroll to my humble abode

This is my contribution to Donna’s Friday’s Foto Flash Fiction #fotoflash

Another week, another dollar, and tired feet.  It’s Friday, Yippee – Finally!  And here I am walking down this narrow path to the end of my week.  Yet again.  Another week.  A humble stroll, to my home down the road.

Like I said, my feet are tired.

I’ve stood and waited on people the entire week.  It’s Friday, and I’m done standing on these feet, until Monday.

I stood, while they sat, in comfy chairs, making decisions about their lives.  Their futures.  Their businesses, and there I was.  Waiting.

Waiting on them.

Waiting to serve them and to make them feel comfortable while they met, and ate and enjoyed the wine of the country.  They came here to taste joys of the area and to feast on delightful new adventures that await what their creative spirits have concocted up with their plentiful funds of kings and queens.

I waited on them as they dined and signed agreements for their destinies, far, far, far away from here.

While my feet ache.  And my heart longed to be rich with money to take adventures like them.

A peasant I am.  A lucky, but very tired peasant I am.

Just a few more curves, and I’ll be home.  I’m tired.

I wonder if the neighbor would notice if I sat here on her chair and rested while I ponder my life?  She’s made it so darn inviting.  Every day, I want to stop and sit and rest and admire people like me, those who work days and weeks away, and then just walk on by.  Tired.  Not stopping to notice her efforts to create this little inviting space.

I wonder if she ever sits here and cheers us, the working for Friday dime peasants, along?

Maybe nobody wants to stop and sit like me?  Maybe they’d feel closed in.  It is a tight fit here.  No wide open spaces to dream.  No, on Friday, we crave open spaces.  Yes, we do.

Open spaces to grow.  And dream.

The plants grow, though, and cobblestone rocks endure the beating of carts and our boots, as we push and shove and stomp our way on by.

I better not sit today.  No, it doesn’t feel right to invade her space.

No, I’ll keep plodding my tired feet on by.  I’ve got responsibilities and the next place to be.

I shall rest and dream soon.  I’ll find my comfy chair and a glass of wine there.  And, then I’ll sit to dream a dream or two of my own.  Cheers to me.

Ah, yes, just a bit further and I’ll be to my humble little abode, just down the road.

  1. Very nice! Flash fiction is a whole different writing experience. I participated for most of last summer in a 99 word flash fiction weekly challenge. I had never done it before then either. It was fun.

    1. Thank you :-)! I bet you’re really good at flash fiction. I don’t know if I could do as little at 99 words, I ramble too much. Hmmm… But it’s fun to play around with different prompts, Donna’s prompt popped up when I visited her site. It’s also fun to interact with bloggers outside of WordPress. Happy Friday to you!

  2. Thank you so much for joining in the first Friday Foto Splash prompt. Your story evoked so many emotions in me – it’s timeless. I think of today and all the waitresses/waiters, factory workers, and others who are on their feet all day. Too tired to talk. Just want to get home. And yes, even once inside the comfort of home, yearning for the wide open spaces – the mountains – the beaches. We all have dreams…

Thank you again – be sure to check back to see who else has contributed and check out their stories.

    1. Thank you for the opportunity to join in! I’ve never done a flash fiction writing, so I’m happy to hear the feedback you’ve shared. Yes, we all have dreams – it’s nice to play with them in writing! I will check back again to see who else joined in. It’s fun to see all the different takes on the photo.

  3. Wow – how unique is this! I came here to check re: yesterday’s post … I will feel your forehead from afar. 🙂 I like this and the ambiance as well.

  4. Wonderful story. It does remind me a bit of motherhood. How we as mom’s are always on our feet waiting on our family, sometime just wanting to sit but too many other things still need to be done.

    1. Thank you, Anita. Yes, it could be a mom too, I can see that for sure. I appreciate your feedback and perspective. 🙂

    1. Thank you, Keith. I enjoyed your story too! I appreciate the warm welcome and your encouragement. It is, as you describe, kind of addictive in a way. It’s my first attempt, so I’m sure I’ll try again. Happy writing to you – you’re way ahead of the train that I am on ;-)!

    1. Aw, thank you, Winnie. You’ve been doing Flash Fiction for awhile. I think you are so talented at it, so I am touched by your encouragement!

      1. You’re welcome, Shelley! You’re doing great on your blog so it’s time for you to venture out like this one. Awww! That’s so sweet of you. Thank you!
