Playing with winter, a photography kind of way

I can do this.  Yes, I can, Laura reminded me it’s possible.  I can be cheery while I enjoy my view of winter.

Despite ALL of the snow, I just know, that I can find a small way to play, and it is always behind the camera that I find that way.

Right?  But it’s so deep and so bright, I really don’t want to go out in it.

So, the next best thing is viewing it from the window.  The dirty windows, but…when in doubt, I say it is okay to just use what you have in front of you!

The blinding white view of winter, that is.  It happens when I’m all click-happy with my camera in manual mode and ironically have the white balance set incorrectly.

Oops…this is better…it was so bright out yesterday, ISO of 100 worked best.  That’s a bright sun, in the middle of the day, in case you, too, haven’t seen it in a while.

The sun plays with shadows on the glistening snow, it’s pretty in a way.  That’s kind of fun, isn’t it?

I imagined a snow angel in an orange cap laying on the ground playfully smiling after she launched herself over the fence…(it’s a stretch, but if I can imagine it, I can create just about anything with a photo editor).

I did the same thing early in the winter when I was sad to see the first snow and I was missing my flower garden in the spring.

I have a quote a day app on my phone and today’s quote is by, Laura, I remember her as an inquisitive and playful young lady.  I followed her (back before blogs) through the books about her growing up years.

When we have piles and piles of snow, I think back to how our kids loved to get all dressed up in snow clothes and go out and play in the snow.  It was fun to watch them from the window, or yeah…get dressed up too and join in on the fun.  I sure do miss them.

They drove a long way through the snowy woods, till they came to the town of Pepin.  Mary and Laura had seen it once before, but it looked different now. – Laura Ingalls Wilder

I was about the same age as Laura was in the books when I read them.  And, by the way, she was born in Pepin, Wisconsin, (not far from where I live now) so she knew what winters in Wisconsin were like.

What must be done is best done cheerfully. – Laura Ingalls Wilder

I have no clue what inspired her for that exact quote above, but when one, aka, me, myself, and I and Copper, are desperate to take a different take at describing the never-ending-winter we’re having through February, I call it the freedom to use MSU expressions to make any and all quotes like above fit right into a blog post when you’re a blogger.

And it’s okay to snub winter while you’re at it…especially when you’re too pooped out to stay out in the snow anymore.

Or do you think he’s snubbing me watching him from the window…or maybe he’s playfully sniffing the air for the first signs of spring?  Yeah, let’s go with that!

IMG_0977csskrupa3

Goodness knows, since he’s so short, he probably can’t see the forest or the trees over the snow piles anyhow?  Being so low to the ground, he’s at a disadvantage.

If he could walk on snow, though, he’d be able to jump the fence and have some real fun.

No matter what, when you’re a cute little dog or a wife with a camera shooting from the windows, a super hooman will shovel for you.  I guess that’s all that matters when you thought you wanted to, or have a longing to go outside to play.

As I picked up my camera and played with settings and angles and objects, it did help cheer my mood yesterday.  See Laura is right!

PS – Do you like winter photography?  Snow is so bright, but the shadows and the sparkles are kind of fun to try to capture.  The melting snow is nice to see, it does mean spring is coming, right?  Tell me it is…I’ll believe you, really, I will!

    1. You’re welcome – the best part after a vacation is the appreciation of it. Welcome back – hope you had a great time!!

        1. Me too…a bit over 2 weeks to go! You’re way better at blog reading to stay in touch. I appreciate you doing so, it means alot to me! Thanks – and safe travels, in case I forget to say so before you leave!

  1. Yes, Spring is coming. I can tell from those amazing bright flowers sprouting up from the snow in your yard!! Great photos 🙂
Have you read “Prairie Fires” by Caroline Fraser? It is about Laura Ingalls Wilder. Fascinating back story to her life.

    1. Thank you! No, I haven’t read that book. Thanks for the suggestion, I’ve added it to my Wan To Read list on my GoodReads account!

  2. Looking at photos of pristine snow makes me long for more of it. Then I remember the realities of living with it, and it doesn’t look so pretty to me. Your photos are lovely, but I can understand why you’re so looking forward to your vacation.

  3. Hmmm, I think beers have to be opened, poured and drank and chips have to be eaten. I will endeavor to do so cheerfully, since it’s Friday.

    1. Excellent plan, and I shall make sure to find out all about it on tomorrow’s SoCS! Enjoy – cheers to you, TGIF! (Hope the weather holds out, too!)

  4. It is amazing how the wind makes such rounded shapes – out in the yard and up against the fences. Lovely shots. Got heavy rain coming here tomorrow. I think I am ready for a dry summer.

    1. Yes, the wind and the snow make very interesting formations. It’s snowing here already at 4 am. Now they are predicting 8-12 inches by the time the storm passes through. Very little rain, compared to what they previously predicted. We’ll just see what happens! Hope your stormy day isn’t too bad!

      1. I guess I should be glad it just rain. Forecast said if it was cold enough to snow it would be 10″ which I guess you are getting. sump pump running all night and has come lose outside and dumping right by my window. Waiting on daylight to reconnect. Always something.

        1. Yikes, that’s horrible. With all of our snow, we don’t want rain on top of it, there will be no place for it to go other than through the doors and windows. I’m praying for you that you’re able to keep the pump working!

  5. The snow in your neck of the woods just blows my mind – poor you, Mr. and Copper … I hope it ends soon. I liked the writing of Laura Ingalls Wilder and I always watched the show “Little House on the Prairie” as well.

    1. Yes, we’ve got snow, and oh, goodie, more for today! I think I should check my bookshelves to see if I have a Little House on the Prairie book to read and cuddle up with a blanket. Maybe a long winter’s nap would help?
