Emptying the nest

My Semi-Organized Most Excellent Miscellaneous Blog Post Ever

Join me in celebrating the fact that I don’t have much to say today. Except for a few miscellaneous items to ponder. Like, wow, that was a gorgeous sunrise in the featured photo above, right? Yeah, I captured that this morning!

And I’m also celebrating the most excellent organization project I found joy in this week.

Excellent always makes me think of this movie…you too?

Back to me and my excellent adventures for the week.

First off, Mr. and I voted in person this past week. I took my own pen because those silly ones they have at the polls at our townhall don’t write well on the bumpy tables.

We had a celebratory-type conversation with an 80-year-old Vietnam Navy Pilot Veteran. His stories were fascinating to hear and made standing in line a joy. He told us about his first flight and his very last flight, which was his scariest flight when he had to land that last time on the ship. We were able to shake his hand and thank him for his service too. I also saw an adorable little girl voter who was so excited to join her mom at the polls she put her shoes on the wrong feet. Simple joys in life.

Next, I sorted all the political ads that came in the mail the month preceding voting day. The pile was random looking, and messy on the kitchen island, so I sorted it out of curiosity.

I’ve yet to figure out the rhyme or reason for their waste of money spent on such things. I sure the heck hope that people don’t only vote based on the ads that arrive in the mail. Yikes. There were the following items from the wannabe celebrities.

One candidate who mailed a flyer had no one running against him. And won. Go figure.

Anyhoo, as I said before, the pile gave me something to organize after I completed the other super-exciting organization project (stay-tuned, that’s detailed below). The candidate’s hopefulness for defeating their opponent met a defencelessly tossing into the recycle bin after I took the photo(s) of the organized pile.

The trees not saved by the printing of the items consisted of:

  • 3 Absentee Ballot Solicitations
  • 1 flyer/letter from an outgoing Senator
  • 34 11X6 flyers
  • 18 11X9 flyers
  • 3 22X11 flyers
  • 6 12X9 flyers
  • 1 14X6 flyer, actually it was a door-hanging flyer (money well spent, I guess, this candidate did win)

Speaking of organizing, over the last month or so, (drumroll please) I completed the excellency’s act of switching out all of my random hangers in my side of the closet. To all matching ones which bring me such joy. The hangers came all the way from China.

Hmm…I think we need better lighting in the closet. The photos make for more of an abstract vibe than the clarity I see in the most excellently spaced hangers ever.

One of the photos looks like toothbrushes…or is that just my imagination?

When Mr. found me standing in the closet admiring my work, I told him that my clothes are so happy. I think if they could, they’d even smile. He voicelessly indicated less enthusiasm for the closet facelift which I still find super-exciting.

The wedding gown, well, that’s just fine stored where it’s at for the last 33 years. It gets less dust in the box. I should donate it, after all, it’s been scarcely worn. LOL!

The old hangers were then organized and sorted into matching piles. I still need to figure out what to do with the old hangers. While I pondered that thought, I went to get my camera to capture proof to show you that exciting outcome. Instead, I got sidetracked. There was a beautiful cardinal in the tree in our yard. I didn’t want to miss that opportunity to capture the beauty of the red against the brown branches. I scrambled to get my longer lens, switched it out, and boom. I got the shot.

Of his back.

I waited long enough (moments, really, literally, moments) to get his profile before…

He fiercely flapped his wings, flew off in an accelerated pace, and then disappeared into the cornfield.

Poof, he was gone.

Well…there you have it folks, I’m all organized out for the week. Let’s celebrate the fact we’ve arrived at a most excellent stopping point for this miscellaneous blog post. The rest of my thoughts are for the birds…

Post Inspiration: Linda G. Hill’s Stream of Consciousness Saturday: Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “starts with or contains ‘cel.’” Find a word that begins with or contains “cel” and use it in your post any way you’d like. Have fun!

PS – Okay, confess and share your thoughts, are you a matchy-matchy closet hanger person, or do you side with Mr. who is just happy to have hangers that hold the clothes? What random act of organizing did you do this week? Is it just me, or has WordPress been messing with settings again?

  1. I love the bird photos, Shelley. I’m with hubs on the hangers. If they hold up my stuff, I’m good. I do think they look like toothbrushes – that’s funny.

    1. Thanks, Dan. We both appreciate your words of encouragement. It’s fun to catch birds in action.
I’m glad it wasn’t just my imagination, I can’t stop seeing the toothbrushes in that photo. 🤣

  2. You space your hangers apart like I do, nice and neat! 😂 I think you have a case of the winter blues, Shelley. Have a great new week!

    1. It’s so fun to see the hangers all hanging so uniformly.
Yes, winterlike temps are hitting us and not being able to spend time sitting in the sun is sad. I better up my Vitamin D supplement!
I hope you have a great week too!

    1. Hi Alice, it’s great to hear from you!
Dang that’s a bummer, I had heard that about Georgia, I’m sorry you’ll have to endure more ads until that happens. 😣 Georgia is a key state for the results for all of us…hang in there!
I hope your day is nice too. 🤗

    1. Hi Chris, thanks for the confession. You know, I’m pretty much the same. If I can’t go all in on the matchy matchy then it doesn’t seem like the effort is worth it. 😉

  3. Excellent post. I loved the trailer picture and the first thought that hit my mind was, wow, how young they were. Time stops for no one. Have an excellent week.

    1. Thank you, Anita, I appreciate your kind encouragement!
Yes, they were SO young and I remember watching that movie when it came out. Yes, indeed, time stops for no one.
Thanks, I hope you have a great week too!!

  4. When I hear “excellent,” I think “Wayne’s World.”

I’d have been more entertained if the guy who had no one running against him had lost.

All of a sudden, the type size on most of the blocks like the paragraph block and the classic block is tiny in the editor.

    1. LOL – YES, Wayne’s World is another great example.

LOL, that would’ve been funnier – another one who won was the coroner, no one ran against him.

I was having a heck of time getting the blocks to pop up, I had to actually go to the menu to have them appear. Normally I can pick from the main part of the post writing space. They’re wanting to get rid of the classic block all together. I wonder what that will mean to all the old posts written in it, will they crash?!

  5. Well I hate when birds treat you to a great pose, but as soon as you pull out the camera, they turn their back on you or even worse, fly away. It’s the equivalent of pooping on your clean window. (Wait, did I say that?) There is nothing as beautiful as a cardinal in a bare tree with snow in the background. It is very peaceful. I’d never get anything done if I had windows I could look out of. My rolling metal shutters are stuck in place, so it’s great for security or if I want to walk around sans clothes (kidding), but I can’t see outside at all. I’m glad the ads, social media and the news are almost done with the mid-term elections, but we have another month of Medicare enrollment mailers and radio ads to get thru.

  6. Ah ha …. You like organizing. Interesting what you did with the political flyers. At least the tv ads are gone! Love seeing cardinals in barren trees … Especially when snow is in the picture. Have a good week!

    1. Hi Frank – thanks for sharing your thoughts. Yes, I do like organizing, it’s the maintaining of the organizing that bores me. 😏 Yes, the ads are gone, for now.
Me too – the pop of the bright red is so fun to see.
I hope you’re having a great week too!

  7. Look at you go! I have to say that my closet is fairly organized, but not matchy-matchy. I do organize my clothes by color though. You’re having issues with the editor? I’ve been having technical problems with WP media library for a long time now. Can’t get a response from WP. Frustrating. Love the cardinal photos!

    1. Thanks for the encouragement. We’ll see how long the ‘organization’ lasts. I try to do by colors too.
Yes, the darn editor changed the past week with the blocks, I had to pop up another menu bar every time I wanted to insert a new block. Ugh… Sorry to hear you’re having media library issues. What is happening? Have you tried their support site with Q&As?
Glad you liked the cardinal photos. 🥰

  8. I like the crocheted turkey. Cute, cute

Are you a matchy-matchy closet hanger person, or do you side with Mr. who is just happy to have hangers that hold the clothes? I’m with Mr.

What random act of organizing did you do this week? Welp, I took three boxes of clothes and housewares to Goodwill BUT also went on a disorganizing frenzy in my closet [where the hangers don’t match] looking for turtlenecks

Is it just me, or has WordPress been messing with settings again? Something weird is always going on with WP! I don’t use Reader but I hear it’s screwy now

    1. Hi Ally, thanks for sharing your thoughts. I love that turkey – it was my mom’s, I think she bought it at a craft show or it was a gift to her.

LOL – well, so far, Mr.’s closet/hanger technique is the winner!

Way to donate more, and make another mess, that’s part of the process. It’s funny you mentioned turtlenecks. Last year, I went through my clothes and took out all the turtlenecks that I didn’t think I’d wear and donated them. This fall, I went looking for them and wondered what happened to them. So I ended up buying a new one. 😏

You’re right, WP is always messing with settings. I’m with you on Reader, I’ve yet to master that.

PS – I enjoyed your Sunday post. I feel your winter blues too. I hope the weather warms up again and winter snow doesn’t appear until it is supposed to!

      1. Your experience with your turtlenecks is why I keep so many around. I hate to buy new clothes unless I really have to. I am not a fashionista.

        1. I think I was going through the phase of, “I don’t really enjoy something tight around my neck so these have to go.” Now that we’ve decided to keep our house temp at 67 degrees, I need to reconsider the important turtleneck or start knitting scarves. Wait…I have a bunch of those already. 🤔😏
          Yay for non-fashionistas! 👗💃🏻🤩

  9. I love organizing my closet at the beginning of each season but I can’t say it stays that way for very long 🙂 Funny that you keep those election fliers. In our house, they don’t make it past the garage door into the house (where we’ve conveniently positioned our recycle box).

Lovely bird pictures! I love the contrast of the red against the gray and white of the tree.

    1. Hi Janis – whew, I’m glad I’m not alone in the organizing and not maintaining afterwards. We’ll see if the matchy-matchy hangers help me last longer this time.

LOL – the flyers normally end up recycled right away, this year I was curious to see how many we’d get with the heated races going on. Today is recycling day – the research project is done 🙂

Thank you – I’m glad you enjoyed the photos. I agree, red, gray, and white are so pretty together.
