My hygge view from Wisconsin

At this time of year, from our special spot of the world, all I see is white when I look outside.

White in the morning.

White at night.

White on the sides of trees after a storm.

White snow branches and glistening frost on the ground.

And I’m often on the fence on if I love winter or not.

Many days I’d prefer to see this other special spot in Jamaica.  At least we got to enjoy it in 2019!  I never tire of looking at the photos we took while we were there.

I can honestly say while traveling to tropical places is fun for us, I’m a homebody for sure.  I love our home and my chair in the corner of the kitchen nook.

I love to sit and watch the view.  Regardless of the season – it’s a special spot for me to notice the seasons as they change.

Last year, I learned the word ‘hygge’ from my daughter.  She gave us this wonderful game for Christmas.

So when the weather outside is less than cozy, Mr. and I mozy to the table to sit and share conversations.

Yesterday, it was over how much snow we really did get in 2019!  A record-breaking year – beating the previous record that happened 90 years earlier!  WOW!

And we shared a glass of wine and some cheese.  And Tostitos…of course!

While we let the hygge candles burn.  It was simply a cozy afternoon.

PS – Your turn, tell me where is your cozy spot for sharing conversations?

    1. The neighbors took their snow mobiles out and did just that this past week. From the tracks it looks like they had fun!

    1. It’s a fun word, isn’t it? Did you read a book too or just heard it? I read a couple books about it and fell in love with the idea. Thanks for stopping by. I love your beach shots – very gorgeous. And your dog…he’s so adorable!!

      1. I don’t remember where I first heard the word. I probably read an article somewhere about it. But it’s a great word for what I think many of us strive to achieve in our homes. For me, it’s not always easy, though. When the house is messy (as it frequently is), I don’t feel very Zen!

Thanks for your compliment on my beach shots. I happen to think my little guy is pretty adorable too. 🙂

        1. I still have trouble pronouncing the word. I agree with you, there’s stuff that gets in the way of making things feel cozy instead of messy! You’re welcome! Dogs can be such charmers!

  1. Record snowfall seasons are always interesting, Shelley – the weather defines so much of what goes on during those months, I hope you can enjoy the view this year, without breaking the tape.

    1. I found the facts interesting. Last year we had a lot of snow. The other seasons seemed quite short in comparison. I’m doing my best to enjoy the view. Some days, I’m better at it than others!

  2. The snow glistening was such a beautiful picture! Makes me want to visit someplace north of me to see actual snow. I don’t have a special viewing spot in the house we are renting. Windows face the neighbor houses. I do miss having a backyard. But we decided it’s not worth paying higher rent and the aggravation of moving again when we know that we will only be here 2 more years at most. So for now I’ll enjoy your photos of snow and look forward to your photos of spring. The internet will have to be my special viewing spot for now.

    1. I do like the glistening snow photos too. I’m glad you enjoyed my photos. I hope you’re able to get outside and see things that you do enjoy. You’re always welcome here to see what I see from the view out my window. Thanks for stopping by!

  3. I learned a new word today. Thank you, Shelley. I enjoyed seeing your white photos, but I hope you keep the white in Wisconsin. I don’t want any here in PA! 🙂 For some reason when my hubby and I walk our tongues loosen up. We have had some of our best conversations while ambling down forest paths.

    1. Yay – there are some fun books about it too. Okay, I’ll keep the snow. Now that you mention it, we tend to open up while we’re walking too. We miss doing that when we’re stuck inside due to the snow. But come Spring we’ll be back at it!

    2. Just wanted to chime in and add the hubs and tend to have quiet walks – not sure why – but maybe because the last decade we have both worked from home 70% of the time and had lots of talks in the house so walks had small talk but many times quietude

      1. Thanks for sharing. Ditto for us – unless we’ve got some hot topic to work out that’s been stressing both of us, then a talking out the frustration walk does both of us good.

  4. The white everywhere is beautiful imo, but I can see where that kind of weather gets tiresome. The older I get, the less I look forward to winter. I would definitely stare at those Jamaica photos every chance I got. Haha. Great photos!

    1. Thank you! It can be beautiful and tiring that’s for sure. I make sure that my screen saver on my computer flashes the Jamaica photos. It’s easy to daydream looking at them.

  5. Oh, such a cozy corner of your home, Shelley! I’d love to sit there and look at the white view too. This year it seems we will have no snow, no winter at all. In that case it will be the second year in a row without meteorological winter. I fear this is the end of real winter here – climate change has already heightened our temperatures with several degrees. I will have to enjoy your winter instead!
A happy thing though, is that you know about Hygge!

    1. Thank you, Ann-Christine. I’m sorry to hear you don’t have any winter, especially since you do enjoy looking at it. It looks like we’re onto the second year where we’re getting more snow than normal.
Yes, Hygge is such a cozy thing – I’m no pro, but I do like to embrace the ideas of it!

    1. Yes, once a person decides to ditch the snow, there’s no drawing them back to the cold, blowing, shoveling….! I hope you’re having a great day too, Alice!

  6. Sounds wonderful! Growing up, we had a round dining room table, big enough for all five of us, plus a guest or two, to sit around. It was wonderful for cozy conversation! My husband and I have never had the right shaped dining room for a round table, so ours is rectangular–and not as conducive to conversation. For that, I like our cozy living room, where there is no TV to distract us. That’s where we rang in 2020, along with a few neighbors. Nice, thought-provoking post, Shelley–and happy hygge weekend!

    1. Thank you, Rebecca. A round table is a wonderful conversation place. Sounds like you enjoy those childhood memories. That’s our hope for our kids too – we made sure that (schedules permitting) we always had dinner together around the table and talked about our days. It was hygge and I didn’t even know the word at that time.
Your living room sounds very hygge. No TV to distract, just conversation and I bet games and books and quiet cuddles in warm blankets are found there too! 🙂

    1. Yay – thanks for stopping by – I wish you rest and recovery before your trip in February. And I’m praying too for the fires in Australia to stop!

  7. Happy New Year to you Shelley! You’ve already got so much snow. We got snow once in December. Of course we still have winter season ahead of us so I know more snow will come our way. Your kitchen nook looks inviting. Enjoy your hygge moments!

    1. Thank you, Natalie! Yes, winter isn’t over yet. It’s important to have a cozy spot in the winter – otherwise I’d go stir crazy (faster)! Enjoy your hygge moments too!

  8. I keep hearing the “hygge” word in blogland – maybe ten times since early January – and cool you have the game!
Nice nook you have set up- for season watching and chatting and just chilling…

    1. Hygge game is fun – you’d be a hoot to play it with. There’s so many thought-provoking questions in it, I’m sure you’d like it! Thanks, we do enjoy our spot in the world. I curl up with the blanket when it feels extra chilly outside!

  9. Shelley, you really take the best photos! Love them. And how lovely that hygge-game sounds…hygge is such a wonderful concept I find. Cozy conversations by candlelight, warm blankets, nice treats…you make me miss Northern winters with your beautiful post! As to your question, I love a good conversation at home, especially on the terrace or the small garden, or while going for walks. And also, on the computer/through Skype, because most of my friends live far away! Wishing you a wonderful start to your week, big hugs xx

    1. Aw, thank you Maria, your encouragement makes me feel all hygge! I’d love to sit on a terrace with a small garden and chat too. That does sound hygge for sure. I love Skype too – with my daughters. I wish you a wonderful week – big hugs to you in Spain! xx

    1. It is fun to chat at a restaurant. It brings about different types of conversations, which is fun. Thanks for sharing!

  10. I love your view. I also think I would do well in Wisconsin since I like snow. To me it means curling up with a good book and hot cocoa. To my husband it means trekking out in the cold to shovel, so he’s not so much of a fan.
Recently read a book about the Danes and Hygge. Very interesting and some good ideas, but I’m pretty happy as is. Thanks for sharing.

    1. Thank you, Geanie! I’m glad you enjoyed seeing snow. It can be quite hygge when snuggled up to watch it fall. I do like those days, it’s like the snowglobe has been shook and I can watch it settle to the ground. Which book did you read? I read several last year and my favorite was: The Little Book of Hygge. I love the idea of it, but I’m like you, pretty happy as is. Thank you for sharing your thoughts!

  11. A perfect word for this season, Shelley. You make a very good argument for curling up in a cozy corner and enjoying the view! I enjoyed your post!

    1. Thank you, Patti! I enjoyed your post too – I’d love to go to see that area, your composition magnified the beauty you saw!

  12. I, too, live in cold country. I don’t like winter but the snow is beautiful. I’m trying to learn to enjoy winter. I loved it when I was in my 20s. I couldn’t wait for it to snow so I could go skiing. Now, I cuddle by the fireplace with cocoa and a good book, and my cats next to me. Does that count as enjoying or simply enduring?!?! 🙂

    1. I feel the same way, Theresa! I think you’re enjoying the time winter provides you with for catching up on reading books and cuddles with the cats. I suspect the cats have no complaints either?! 😉

  13. Well that was a new word for me – I Googled it before you defined it in your post. My favorite picture is the snow on the fence. I liked that up close up with the snow. I did not participate in your survey as I did not want to embarrass myself – no one has been in my house, except contractors, since December 2010!

    1. It was a new word for me last year too. I should’ve put virtual conversations as an option – you do that so well, you’re easy to talk to and you leave genuine comments. I think that counts!

      1. Well thank you – I managed to get caught up so I was only 10 hours behind in Reader and finished off a fun post I started last weekend. Now I’ll deal with the snow that fell last night – not sure if I attack it with a broom or a shovel, but I know I am not lacing up my walking shoes.

        1. I’m impressed, way to go, Linda! Catching up feels great doesn’t it? And, way to find a way to exercise no matter what the weather.

          1. Well, I was caught up to 10 hours and must be 2-3 days behind again. I had an appeal brief to file at work this week and we filed it earlier today, though it was not due til Monday, but we decided with e-filing and the NLRB was doing maintenance on their site Friday/Saturday and the last time it was not 100% for a few days, it was better to just file early since it was done. It feels good, but I’m behind here and in e-mails, and my other social media sites. I am trying my best to follow my resolution of more sleep and less time online, but it is pretty difficult to get that accomplished.

    1. Thank you, Teresa – I just found your comment in my spam folder! I hope it wasn’t too chilly there!! I appreciate you stopping by to share your thoughts, thank you!!
