How to make your elderly dog feel fantastic

How do you make an elderly dog feel fantastic?  When they look up at you, like a loyal fan with adoring eyes, you know you’re on the right track.

At least, that’s what I think.

And, according to Copper, our 15-year-old Pomchi, who’s an expert on what makes a dog feel fantastic or not, he’d tell you that it also involves the following things.

A full moon to howl at.  Nah … just kidding, that’s only for wolves in the wild, right?!
IMG_3940csskrupaquaintrevival
Dr. Marty’s Nature’s Blend, it’s raw dehydrated food that I top off with warm water to soften it.

I let the water soak in … the aroma fills the air.  Copper can smell it while he waits patiently.  Now that he can’t hear, his nose goes wild for smells of any kind of raw meat.

He poses all cute while I mash the food so it’s easier for him to eat.  He dreams about how it’ll taste.

I add 6 drops of CBD Oil and mix it in with the food.

That seriously gets Copper’s attention, he knows the next step is the last step before he’s fed.

I top his food with a bit of his sisters’ food.  For some reason, he thinks he’s a cat-dog?

He dashes off to the place where I set his bowl down, and he chows down until he’s full.  Sometimes he eats the whole bowl, other times he leaves some for a mid-day snack.

Then he begs to go outside, hops down the steps, does his business, then bolts back up the stairs.

Copper feels fantastic – no aches and joint pains.

And … then he snuggles in his little bed and crashes for a nap while I work at my computer.  He’s my loyal and faithful fan.

Ah … to be a dog.  We’re so happy that he’s feeling extra spunky after we started the CBD Oil a little over a week ago.  We want to make his last years of life as comfortable as possible.

Meanwhile … the cats are up to no good as they wait for their mid-morning snacks.

PS – With all the craziness going on in the world, wouldn’t it be fantastic to be a dog for a day?  Or would you rather be a cat?  I hope you’re having a peaceful and safe weekend.  Take care, stay tuned for more!  xx

  1. Copper is a sweet boy! So cute. The oil seems very popular these days for pets and hoomans.

  2. How did you decide how many drops to give him, and what fraction of my weight is Copper? Hmmm?

In fact, Copper’s looking good! Glad you all made it through that long winter, including the lovely grass.

    1. According to the bottle, 10 drops for each 10 #’s of dog. Since I wasn’t sure how he’d respond, and he’s only about 8.5-9.0#’s I went with a conservative 6 drops. If I were to give it to Dessy, I think I’d triple the drops?
Yes, he’s looking quite handsome in his old age. We did make it through the long winter, that isn’t his favorite time of year. So far this year he hasn’t been allergic to the grass yet either.

    1. Thank you, Janis. Yeah, I’m with you on those sentiments. I hope your laptop is still working and that your new computer will arrive soon.

  3. I gave our geriatric Mary Moo canned cat food, too – worked well. When I tried CBD oil, she had terrible diarrhea for the next two days. It might not have been a good brand/mix, but I was afraid to try it again. I’m glad Copper is feeling good!

    1. Thank you for sharing, JoAnna. Our (and your) pets are lucky we’re so concerned about their well being. That’s a bummer that the CBD Oil didn’t work for Mary Moo. We’re happy so far with the results for Copper.

        1. Thank you, JoAnna. Mr. did the research on brands, I just pay the bill when it comes in ;-). So far, so good for Copper 🙂

  4. He’s quite elderly at 15, isn’t he? If he’s bouncing up and down the stairs like you say, that CBD oil must be having a good effect… May he live another 15, at lreast!

    1. Yes, he’s getting up there in years and stairs. 😉 I doubt it’ll be another 15 years, but his last few will be comfortable for him, I hope.

    1. So far, it’s been a good solution for Copper. The cats are always jealous of him. He has extra spunk that he’s using to chase them away. It’s quite comical being that he’s the smallest one of the bunch.

    1. Yes, it came on gradually. I think he appreciates the kindness we’re extending. I sure will miss him when he’s no longer with us. He seems to be doing well for now!

  5. Shelley – I didn’t know Copper was a Pomchi – thought he was a Chihuahua. That accounts for the fuller face. Remember how happy you were when you discovered this food for Copper last year – it only gets better now. No wonder he awaits that bowl of food so eagerly!

    1. Yes, his dad was a fluffy black Pomeranian and his mom was a Chihuahua. I think he got the best of both of them. He’s quite happy lately, so we’re grateful for that. Thank you for remembering the food – yes, that’s working well too.

      1. Amazing that Copper turned out with light brown fur and no black fur at all. That’s great that he is feeling like a pup again. Thank goodness you determined what can make him feel better and it was a simple switch of his food.

        1. Yes, we thought that was weird too. When he was little, he had a slight black streak going on in his tail that curls like his dad’s.
We’re happy for his spunk. I wish he could still hear, that would make it easier to not worry about his nose taking him on wild chases. 🙂

          1. His new food has a lot to do with his spunk, so you owe that good news to your research Shelley. Hopefully Copper’s eyesight is still good, so he doesn’t explore any blooms with bees in the yard. 🙂

          2. Yes, he’s still enjoying his new food. He eats when he wants to and is slim and trim for his age. His eyesight is sketchy, but better than his hearing. He stays clear of bees when he sees them. We appreciate your concern for his well-being. 🙂

          3. Isn’t it about a year ago that you were experimenting with his food? It’s good it is working out … luckily you are with Copper most every hour he is awake so you don’t have to worry about any issues while you are gone. Good he steers clear of bees … I’ve seen photos of bee stings in a dog’s face and it looks like mumps!

          4. Yes, what a wonderful memory you have. Last year, grass was a high allergen for Copper, so we worked on food and washing his feet. So far this year, with the new food, grass hasn’t been a problem for him. Yikes on the bee stings.

          5. Thank you Shelley. I was feeling badly for Copper. They bring such joy into our homes and hearts … good that it is working out so well. The poor dogs around here listening to fireworks. Every. Single. Night. since mid-May. People in the crime/neighborhood forum say they have to tranquilize their dogs to keep them from shaking, or, in some cases, they have gone outside and jumped the fence. It is just crazy.

          6. This was the first 4th of July that Copper was calm and slept right through the fireworks. He didn’t hear a one. And our new windows helped muffle the sounds too, so we slept through them as well. Our Golden Retriever LOVED fireworks. I do feel for the dogs that are terrified, it must be miserable for them.
