And then Spring speaks

IMG_4233csskrupa3

It may be hard for an egg to turn into a bird: it would be a jolly sight harder for it to learn to fly while remaining an egg.  We are like eggs at present.  And you cannot go on indefinitely being just an ordinary, decent egg.  We must be hatched or go bad. – C. S. Lewis

I’m very happy being me, although sometimes I’d love to be a bird so that I could fly. – Joy Fielding

No better way is there to learn to love nature than to understand art.  It dignifies every flower of the field.  And, the boy who sees the thing of beauty which a bird on the wing becomes when transferred to wood or canvas will probably not throw the customary stone.  – Oscar Wilde

I don’t ask for the meaning of the song of a bird or the rising of the sun on a misty morning.  There they are, and they are beautiful. – Pete Hamill

It doesn’t have to be a blue iris, it could be weeds in a vacant lot or a few small stones; just pay attention, then patch a few words together and don’t try to make them elaborate, this isn’t a contest but the doorway into thanks, and a silence in which another voice may speak. – Mary Oliver

Post inspired by Linda G. Hill’s One-Liner Wednesday and a misty spring morning.

PS – Your turn to speak…!  Which quote sparks memories of Spring for you?  Did you know that House Finches have up to 6 clutches from March to August?  And that they only successfully raise 3 of them?  No wonder they’re doing the bird dance again.  They’re busy like the bunnies…!?  Happy Wednesday – hope your week is going well!

  1. Such cute photos! Especially love that one of the bird looking over its shoulder in the 3rd pic. My favorite quote is the Mary Oliver one. Great post and, as always, beautiful photos. The birds are so cooperative in their posing 🙂

    1. Thank you! Yes, I love that photo and quote too. That Mr. Finch, he’s quite the character. They do seem to enjoy posing for me when they know I’m behind the glass!

    1. Thank you, Erica – glad you enjoyed the post. Yes, you’re right, none of us remain an egg! Which is a good thing!

  2. I like all the bird pictures … the female looks a little aloof in the pictures compared to the male. My favorite quote is:

“I don’t ask for the meaning of the song of a bird or the rising of the sun on a misty morning. There they are, and they are beautiful.” – Pete Hamill

    1. Thank you! Yes, she’s tired of him following her around the yard everywhere she goes. I do like that quote as well. 🙂

  3. Reading of the bird and egg reminded me of an A A Milne poem

    Cottleston Cottleston Cottleston Pie,
A fly can’t bird, but a bird can fly.
Ask me a riddle and I reply
    Cottleston Cottleston Cottleston Pie.

    Cottleston Cottleston Cottleston Pie,
Why does a chicken? I don’t know why.
Ask me a riddle and I reply
    Cottleston Cottleston Cottleston Pie.

    Cottleston Cottleston Cottleston Pie,
A fish can’t whistle and neither can I.
Ask me a riddle and I reply
    Cottleston Cottleston Cottleston Pie.

    1. Thank you, Anita – it was a fun moment to capture. Birds are so interesting to watch – he’s one to pose a lot!

  4. I love the C.S. Lewis quote. It exemplifies life. Our bluebirds had one egg that did not hatch this year. Made me sad and I wonder what they think when one egg is not viable. Of course, maybe birds do not think, but they protect their nest and their fledglings so fiercely, they have some instinct. Beautiful post as always.

    1. Thank you for sharing your thoughts, Maggie. I’m glad you enjoyed the post. I’m like you – I feel sad when an egg doesn’t make it. Our birds are very territorial, so we haven’t been able to see into their nests. Probably a good thing all around! 😉

      1. Bluebird nests need attention so we check them frequently. We attended a class and learned that paper wasps love to build nest in the bluebird house which will cause the birds to abandon the nest. After the birds fledge, we remove the old nest. Sometimes they will nest two or three times a season. They are beautiful birds to watch.

        1. Ah…that’s why after the first year we never saw Bluebirds nesting in those houses! UGH…I love them, they are so pretty. Way to keep on top of their needs. Your kindness is so heartwarming.

          1. We never knew until we attending a bluebird workshop at our local seed store. Forever the student…

  5. Great bird photos! As to spring, it always brings MUD to my mind. LOL! Fall is my favorite season – the colors, the cool air, the fresh smell in the air!

    1. Thank you, Donna – I’m a spring lover after a long winter, but I do adore the colors and crisp air of fall!
