Going Gray

Achieve the perfect bouncy curly gray hair look

I have naturally curly hair. Truth be told, one of my biggest fears about letting my hair go gray is it will look like a Halloween witch wig. My goal during the growing out stage is to make sure my curls stay on the soft and bouncy side.

I did some YouTube research last week to see if I could find some advice. I researched for so long, sorry, I can’t remember exactly what video I watched. I found specifics though on how to properly care for curly gray hair. I was excited to find someone talking exactly about what I was wanting instruction on. My theory is if I don’t have something mastered, and someone has a better idea to try, it’s worth my time to give it a try.

Here are the suggestions I decided to try:

Use Joico Cleansing Curl Shampoo and Curl Nourished Conditioner check it out. The shampoo is sulfate free, so it doesn’t lather like other shampoos. One site I read said it might not be good for dry hair, oh, oh…but on the flip side, it said it is good for dye treated hair because sulfate shampoos tend to strip color as well as grime. If you also find you have skin irritation, sulfate free shampoos are recommended.

I have noticed the shampoo I was using seemed to turn my dyed hair brassy-like rather quickly.  Each session of coloring left my scalp feeling itchy and irritated. The good thoughts about sulfate free shampoo outweighed the potential drying out factors.

I opted for trying the new shampoo and conditioner in hopes it will help my hair soften as the gray hairs grow out. The hairdresser in the video said it is important after shampooing to apply the conditioner and brush it in with a brush that won’t damage the hair.  Let set and rinse thoroughly.  She said some brushes and combs actually damage the hair by breaking it while brushing. Man, I didn’t know that? Low and behold, she had a suggestion for a brush too, made by Denman. check it out

Today was the big day to try out the new technique. Sounds perfect for me based upon the claims on the bottles. Shampoo “for bouncy, healthy curls” and Conditioner “to repair and replenish curls.”

Curly hair is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re going to get.

Softer Bouncy Curl Success

The results are in. The sulfate free shampoo does not lather like my old shampoo. The conditioner and brush technique was really pretty cool. I’ve always just plopped the conditioner on and spread it around with my hands and rinsed. The brush technique really did distribute the conditioner more thoroughly.

My hair feels softer, and the curls are bouncier and less poofy than they were with my other shampoo/conditioner/washing technique. I’m sold on this technique. Good graycious, I love it when things work out the way I hoped. Have you had good luck with sulfate free products too?
