Macro photography – play until you get it right

Macro photography works some of the time, but when it doesn’t, it can look pretty darn messy.

In my garden, I have lots of diagonal lines.  Big ones, like in the latticework, and tiny ones, too.  Some of my favorites are on the blades of the leaves of the flowers.

What the heck, is that blocking the view?

I stepped back and took a look to see all the options.  In a quest to capture a few more tiny diagonals, I went in for the macro technique.

First, I tried my Tiger Lily – I checked in to see if the second bud had opened up yet?  Nope, but there are tiny lines on the opened flower.

Here’s my first close-up fail of the day.

2nd attempt – the tiny diagonal lines are better…and the grass stalk even joined in.

Oh, the excitement started to build…I saw one Zinnia that’s about ready to bloom.

See it, too?

Try again…

WTH…for goodness sake…one more time?

I did finally get a couple better shots…my drawing doesn’t quite do the flower justice.

I can’t wait to see what it looks like in full bloom.

I might just have to give the macro technique another try!

PS – How about you, do you like macro photography?  What’s your favorite topic for macro photography?  Do you play until you get a great shot, too?

  1. The close-up of the lily is my favorite, Shelley. You may have had a few fails, but you also have some great macro shots. Keep trying and you’ll be a master at this very soon!

  2. Love that picture of the Lily 😊 And your drawing made me laugh this morning Shelley (thank you!). I usually play with my camera until my time is up…you know until the kids need attention or supper needs to be made or I am late for work…I bought a macro lens in April and finally made some time to play with it this last weekend. Too much fun 😊

    1. Aw, thanks! Glad I gave you a smile moment! I can’t wait to see your macro photos! Enjoy your playing time with your kids and your camera!

  3. Love macros! I find that practice makes, well if not perfect, than at least better! 🙂 I still disregard more shots than I save. But it is so much fun! Have you tried manual focus?
The colours of the lily is beautiful and I hope you post a pic of the zinnia in full bloom!

    1. Thank you! Yes, I discard most shots too. Yes, that’s the mode I shoot in – manual all the time! I’m so excited to have many options for flowers this year, so yes, please stay tuned for more shots! I appreciate you stopping by!

  4. The tiger lily is so pretty with all the bright colors mingled in. I like how you keep trying with the macro. I don’t have any idea of doing that kind of photography. I suppose you need special lenses? All I have is my phone camera. I love zinnias, and I’m sure yours will be lovely when it reaches full bloom. 🙂

    1. Thank you! It’s just my standard lens on my camera – shooting in manual mode. I’d have no idea how to do it on my phone! I hope I get a bunch of zinnias in different colors!

    1. Oh, my, gosh…it does look like sushi! 🙂 Thank you for sharing your thoughts! Happy photo clicking to you!

    1. Birds are so fun to watch, I’ve yet to experiment with taking shots of them. Thank you for stopping by and for sharing your thoughts!

  5. I love macro photography too! I have the same dilemma. It’s a good thing we don’t use films anymore, isn’t it? We can take unlimited shots 😉. I love this post, Shelley!

    1. Oh, my, yes – it’s a good thing we don’t use film anymore!! Thank you for stopping by to share your thoughts, Winnie!
