A peek at spring – don’t let the sunshine fool ya!

I’m here to report that, with my fingers crossed, March is bringing us spring weather without the ass-whooping tail of a lion.  I’ve got the whole month to plan for that to arrive.  I’m ecstatic and ready to restart my wardrobe with shorts instead of compression fitting skinny jeans.  It’s time to let my white-haven’t-seen-the-sun-in-forever-babies free to catch some fresh air, sunshine, and breath baby breath!  (Wait, it might just be the fasting day talking?  I always feel that way…delirious…goofy? – Yeah, normal, whatever…)

I got creative with my fasting oatmeal breakfast and went all red, white and blue themed.  How patriotic of me, eh?  It was almost too pretty to eat, except, I needed the nourishment to make it to dinner time.  After I took several pictures, of course, I gobbled away pondering about how far away Chile is from Wisconsin, and how these blueberries traveled all the way here just to be consumed by little ol’ me.  (If you’re new here – I take photos of what food I eat and my pets – both are easy prey, and I occasionally digress…).

In upnort Wisconsin, the temperatures brought on by spring sunshine are a crap shoot on whether it will be warm or not when you head outside.  From the inside looking out, it’s deceiving.  You don’t know if you should wear a coat or shorts.  Where we live, affectionately known as the tundra, it is rare for us not have wind – so we count on it being cooler than what the thermometer says.

Yesterday, the sun was shining and it looked warm.  I grabbed the leash, watched Copper do his adorable little ‘we’re going for a walk dance’ and we took off outside for a walk.  You’d fall for it too, those beautiful beach waves glistening in the snow…were so inviting, right??  Jealous aren’t you?

After having spent the winter cooped up inside, we’re both out of shape for road walking.  We don’t go far (1/4 of mile one way tops) because the return trip is me carrying Copper and him enjoying the scenery until we get home.  I get some 10# weightlifting in while I walk, so the brief walk IS a workout – don’t judge me for the short distance.  Jeez.

I was fooled into thinking it was going to be warm – it was damn cold on our speed walk.  The surf rippling in waves across the open field of snow chilled us to the bone.  I pulled my hood over my head, dipped down in a squat formation, picked Copper up, and booked my in-toning-session-ass back home.  I squeezed him the whole way trying to stay (keep him) warm.  All the cold air he sniffed in made it hard for him to breathe.  I set him down on the floor upon entering the house, getting in another squat, and kindly reminded him, “You wanted to go along!”

Since I carried him home, he still had to do his business – so I booted his sorry little ass outside as I watched him from the window.  Spring morphs our yard into a lake, aka, our waterfront property without the extra taxes.  Copper hates to get his feet wet because that means someone wipes them when he comes back in the house.  Not only does he have a limited poop zone, he is now surrounded by puddles.  Poor little Copper.

Chirping sounds of seasonal birds – who are arriving back on their return flights from whatever southern paradise they went off to in the fall – fill the air.  Birds don’t do staycations like us.  My brother texted me yesterday, “Hey, the Robins are back, there are two of them in my backyard.  I’m not getting my hopes up, they’re probably lost.”

Those of us in the know – know that once the Robins return we’re on the home stretch to spring and more birds will be hopping around the yard.

The grass will turn green again, it always does.  But first, we go green with shamrock shakes (and beer).  Those nasty shakes have never been on the fasting diet…too many calories, sugar, and other crap, right?  On a normal, balmy, day, I’d much rather have a frozen grasshopper.  (I warned you I digress sometimes…)

When the birds start landing on the trees and fluttering by the windows, our cats – who know best not to venture out in the cold – turn their interests to watching out the windows.

Tizzie climbs the cupboard tops, cuddles in for naps – her eyes open as she sleeps – keeping watchful eyes on her sister.  From the world above, she relishes the fact her sister has never seen her turf up there and that she’s got prime bird watching space all to herself.

Dessy (aka, Chubba), knows her limitations and rarely launches her girth to new landing spots, especially anything vertical above counter height.

She can make it from floor to chair to counter, no problem.  And with a lot of butt-shaking, she can move horizontally from counter to table, but never from counter to fridge top and then up another story to the cupboard tops.  She’s pretty serious when it comes to thinking about any move that doesn’t involve food or one that would take her too far away from food.

Anyhoo, enough peeking at spring – I wish it would just get here already.  It’s another day, another dollar to be made.  Is it Friday yet??  I hear meowing, better go feed the cats some food…see you soon, you all come back now!

What is your favorite time of year?  Did you shave your legs in anticipation of spring yet?  What the heck…?  TMI??  Did you notice the double letter words featured in the photos today, if not…see below?

  1. Things were fine and dandy here in SE Mich until I got 6” dumped on me yesterday (although the white-caked trees like brilliant in the sun)!

My favorite time of year is anytime between May and October. I know I’m living (stuck) in the wrong state, as I abhor winter. 😉

    1. March snows up here in the Midwest are a bummer, no matter how pretty they are, right? Those are my favorite months too. I’ll be feeling your pain of snowstorm arrival, I hear we’re supposed to get 5-8″ of snow on Monday or Tuesday next week. Thanks for stopping by to share your thoughts, Alan!

  2. Once you see a robin, you’re in the home stretch.
We just had a blizzard yesterday.
    Le sigh.
Four trees down on our property and absolutely no word yet when we’ll get our power back on.
Country living may have its benefits but it sure does have its drawbacks too!
We saw a robin also the other day but it gave us the feather and flew away.
Guess he knew something we landlubbers don’t.
    LOL!

    1. Oh, my, goodness, that’s horrible about your trees and no electricity! Hope the power returns before the snow melts. Birds are smarter than we give them credit for (sometimes!) Take care, thanks for sharing your thoughts!
