Time to break out the running shoes

Today was the day I no longer let this relentless winter weather thwart me from getting outside to enjoy some fresh air.  I needed a view of a different type of scenery involving nature outside of our house.  Even if the view everywhere I look is still white with dead trees waiting to bud, there’s got to be something to help me with creativity.  I’ve heard spending some time connecting with nature is a perfect way to spark ideas.

Creativity may be hard to nurture, but it’s easy to thwart. – Adam Grant

After the second nap of the day, I woke up feeling slightly more refreshed, but not as much as I hoped I would.  I looked at the temperature outside and saw 38 degrees.

Heatwave!!  Woohoo!

And, it wasn’t freezing, snowing, blowing, or raining.  The sun wasn’t shining, but if the turkeys can run in this weather, then so can I.

A break from the treadmill to run outside I knew would melt my blues away.

Cooperate with your destiny, don’t go against it, don’t thwart it.  Allow it to fulfill itself. – Nisargadatta Maharaj

Determined to make it happen, I headed to the closet to gear up with my dear running clothes.  I sat on the floor in my walk-in closet, pulled on my Under Armour clothes – that, by the way, compress my legs considerably more than skinny jeans – grabbed a top layer wind suit, and headed to the door to meet the two shoes I haven’t put on in 8 months.

The last time I wore them, I came in first for my age group in a 5-mile race.  I smiled as I thought I’d be lucky to do 2 miles today.  I told myself as I tied my shoes, “No pressure, this is the first run, just have fun.”

Holy crap – 8 months.  That’s a long winter.  There’s no way I could back out I had to go!

Copper helped me get ready.  He was disappointed when he figured out he couldn’t go along.

A successful 3.9-mile run later, I returned as a sweat-soaked woman (I’m sure I lost a couple pounds…where’s the scale?).  I was happily satisfied to have survived the first run of spring outside.  I arrived back, free of injuries to the warmth and safety of home, sweet, home.

Just in time to enjoy a pizza with the Mr.

Two naps, a run, enough calories burned to eat a few slices of pizza, what more could a girl ask for to make it a great day?
