Study nature – let your camera play

Give me a day to play with my camera in nature, and I’m in heaven.  I know if I let the camera do what it does best, without me trying to get the perfect picture, I will be amazed at what I see during editing.

There are many things I love to take pictures of, but at the top of my favorite’s list are shots of nature in action.  No matter which way I turn, there is something to take a picture of.  A session without an official “must get this shot” roster makes the lessons learned more enjoyable versus feeling as though it is a chore.

Study nature, love nature, stay close to nature.  It will never fail you. – Frank Lloyd Wright

I like to play with how I hold the camera.  I don’t always look directly through the lens.  Sometimes I hold it out in front of me at hip or ground level and click away.  I feel my anticipation grow when I do that.

Insects are fun to inspect in edit mode.  They look less intimidating that way.

Bees are tricky – but the longer I stand still, the more shots I end up getting.  A busy bee is busy doing its thing, so it doesn’t mind me standing there clicking away.  I haven’t been stung yet!

I adore the element of surprise when I see tiny objects or bugs I’ve caught in the frame.  Like ants – many times I didn’t see them with my naked eye.  I was too busy trying to catch the main attraction in the frame.

To acquire knowledge, one must study; but to acquire wisdom, one must observe. – Marilyn vos Savant

Almost as much fun as taking the pictures is the editing process for me.  I learn to investigate the results which help me appreciate what I hadn’t noticed at first glance.  Photography is a constant state of learning for me.

When you run into something interesting, drop everything else and study it. – B.F. Skinner

Elements of nature in action add a special touch of class to photos.  Oh, my, I’m looking forward to spring and summer…and the warmer weather…good thing I have lots of pictures to investigate until then!

    1. Thank you, Donna! I typically run from bees too, but when they’re busy collecting pollen, they seem to ignore me.

    1. Hi Cindi, I have a Canon EOS Rebel XSI and use just the lens it came with. I set on Manual and adjust the ISO and white balance manually. I’m very non-tech about it, just play around until I get the look I like.

        1. Yes, a Canon girl I am! I love it. It was my daughter’s first “big” camera. She upgraded and I inherited it. It was intimidating at first, but I’ve grown to love it. I learned how to take the photos from FroKnows Photos back before it cost $67! https://froknowsphoto.com/fro-video-guide/ Thank you for your appreciation of my photos!

    1. Hi, I have used a different lens, but these were taken with the lens that came with the camera. I look forward to seeing the pictures in the spring!

  1. How timely! Yesterday I gave my old digital camera to my six year old to start taking pictures of nature. He is so interested in getting the details of leaves and flowers. In the back of my mind I wonder if he is learning while doing this, but I know that appreciating nature and learning to observe are valuable life skills. Thanks for reinforcing this belief! I love the quotes you picked. 🙂

    1. Hi, thanks for stopping by and for sharing your thoughts! When our kids were young we did the same thing…the pictures they took are so interesting. We have lots of doll photos, and dinos too! We were pretty happy when the digital cameras came out instead of film! 😉

  2. Need to add to my previous comment: I just reviewed his pictures and there are many pics of trees and flowers he took on our walk, but he went crazy taking pictures of his dino toys and his sister’s My Little Pony ponies posing together. oy!!

    1. Thank you, I appreciate you taking time to view them and reply. You, too, have beautiful photos on your blog! Hope today finds you having fun spending time with your camera!

        1. Oh my, I think I have the same addiction and will be doing the same thing! 🙂 Glad to hear you have great plans ahead!

  3. I completely relate. A camera captures a moment in time. I like when I back to look and say, oh, yeah, I forget about that one. Or the one I ay hmmm, not sure I got that, and it’s just right. 🤗

    1. Aw, what a great perspective, I do that too!! Thank you for sharing your feedback – you do catch GREAT shots no doubt!
