Life’s unexpected moments

10 years ago an unexpected moment changed my life.  I can relive that particular moment and the ones following it just like 10 years haven’t even gone by.

As human beings living this thing called life, we all have unexpected moments.

Some moments are so bad you wish they hadn’t happened and some are so incredibly awesome you’re glad they did happen.

As we reflect, we manage to see how the unexpected moments have balanced out our life and made them better.

It is easier now for me to find the good things about my unexpected moment, but when I was in the midst of it happening it was real, real hard.  Back then, I had to make decisions I never, ever, dreamed I would have to, nor did I want to.  But I did.  And I lived through it.  And I survived.  I didn’t then and still don’t want to focus on the harder parts of that time in my life.

I want to remember how the unexpected moments helped me grow and learn resilience.

Unexpected moments change us and continue to ripple through us as we bounce back and forth between the memories of what happened and realities of how it affected our lives.

Life moments fly by faster and faster as time goes on.

When we find ourselves on a new unexpected path, ready or not, we’re there.  We can’t stop unexpected things from happening.

Whatever the new path is though, it is there for us to discover, learn, and ultimately accept and grow with it.

Just when I think I have learned the way to live, life changes. – Hugh Prather

Changes in life remind us we’re fortunate.  We find our resilience in those moments.  That’s one of our greatest gifts being human.

Resilience is all about being able to overcome the unexpected.  Sustainability is about survival.  The goal of resilience is to thrive. – Jamais Cascio

Resilience doesn’t mean we’re not changed somehow (for better or worse) from the experiences of unexpected happenings in life.  We may have had other plans for our life, and that sometimes sucks big time to have to change or admit we need to change.  But when something unexpected happens, we can look to our resilience and faith to help us survive and forge ahead on the new path.

We may feel invisible, numb and unsure as we glide our way through unexpected moments.

We question everything and find it hard when the answers don’t come as quickly as we wish they would.  Even when we find an answer, we never really know if it is the right one or not.

But our not knowing how or why the unexpected came into our lives isn’t the point.  There is always more to discover.

It’s the surviving and learning how to live with a change that matters most.

The good news is – there does come a day when we accept our new path and what has happened in our life as a result of unexpected moments.

We feel stronger and confident in the choices we made following those unexpected moments.  We’re lucky to have the ability and freedom to choose our reactions to life’s unexpected moments – whatever they are.

As humans, our unexpected moments in life – whether they are big or little, horrible and unbearable, or beautiful and uplifting – are precious moments and there to remind us who we are. Human. Every day is a new day to not be afraid.

The main thing in life is not to be afraid of being human. – Aaron Carter
