Going Gray

Going gray – the first 6 months completed

Here I am at 6 months and 12 days into the transition from brunette to gray.  I’ve made it through the first 1/3 of the journey!  Spring is here and whew, the first six months of transition was easy!?  A little humor never hurts right?

At this stage, hiding the gray isn’t even worth the effort.  It is time to just let it show.  You can use your old hair to accent the gray with braids or curls or whatever creative way you think of.

How does this time in the transition to gray feel?  Kinda weird, kinda blah, kinda ho-hum, kinda…well, not sure what to say.

It’s officially Spring and this time of year feels the same way, kinda weird, kinda blah, kinda ho-hum, kinda…well…not quite there yet.

The drab colors of early spring – blah browns of the grass just waiting to sprout green and the blah grays of the trees just waiting to get buds.  Soon, all the sparkles of spring will be sprouting.

Reminds me of my transitional hair.  Some blah browns overshadowing the new grays…blah, blah, blah.  But soon, I know the silvers in my hair will continue to sprout and stand out and shine way more than the blah colors.  Some of the wiry ones already do that! Over achievers I guess?

In retrospect, I’m happy I chose to spend the long winter in the early stages of going gray.  Now with spring and warmer weather coming, I can pull back my hair and let the gray show.  The old color can be pulled back and just accent the gray instead of the other way around.

Finally there’s enough gray showing that people are slightly more inclined to say something to you when you pull it back.

This week I got a trim.  It was so tempting to cut off all the old colored hair.  I’m.still.not.ready.to.go.short!  My hair dresser was kind enough to remind me of the length of the journey.  Going gray naturally takes patience.  I’m about a third of the way to the goal line.

You don’t get to see your hair from the 360 view like your hair dresser does.  Mine told me I’ve got a darker streak running through the middle of my head, and the rest of the hair is lighter on top and bottom.

OMG…I’m so excited about seeing all the variations of gray coming in.  She even styled it a bit differently to shake it up a bit.  Normally I have a side part, she tried out a middle one.

The next day, I even received a compliment on my new hair cut.  Brightened my day with a little ray of sunshine.

Later in the week, I ran into a couple of friends, both are a decade or so younger than me. Not that I’m counting years!  Okay, so I am, it’s a girl thing?!?

One said, “I love your natural look, people pay good money to get that look. I so wish I could do it but my hair dresser tells me it will ruin my hair trying to get it to a gray look.”  Another ray of sunshine, I’m finally able to have a look that I don’t have to pay for, and it’s an “in” thing!

But then…just like an early spring frost shocking any new buds on trees, I received a reminder that not everyone thinks gray is cool.

The other friend said, “Are you going with the natural look?  No offense and don’t take this wrong, but you’re going to look old with it.”  Sigh.

Yep…this stage is kinda weird, kinda blah, kinda ho-hum, kinda…well, not sure what to say.

On second thought, I do know what to say.  I’m thankful I’ve come this far!  The best is yet to be!
