Building spring relationships

I knew it was going to happen as soon as the ground thawed.  I’ve been prepared for it, even if I don’t like it.  They delivered the building supplies this week.

And yesterday, out came their mallets and up went the start of the walls.

The building that will block my sunrise view has claimed its space in the lot across the road.  Gone are the 27 years I’ve had of watching the trees grow and my gorgeous view of the sunrise.

But it is spring, and strange things happen in the spring.

Like ducks laying on eggs and cats nursing their kittens, all together in one nest as they raise their young.

What?

Isn’t that what you know to be true, too?  Ducks and cats together in one nest?

Yep – here’s proof.

See the little kitten’s nose, right under the ducks tail?  There are two kittens in that nest along with their mamma who is smart.  She knows duck feathers still attached to a duck are extra warm.

This mamma is my grandcat’s mamma.

Our little Wasabi (Bee for short) is so cute!  She looks like her mamma, doesn’t she?

And now, her mamma has a new litter, this time with two kittens.  The other kitten was nestled closer to the duck, who has become protective of her extra soft litter of two.  We were able to hold this one.  It is adorable.  And small, and NO! – we don’t need another cat.  But, it is still fun to see the family resemblance.

Spring, I tell ya, is a unique time of year.  It is when we humans partake in changes happening around us and we discover how strangers can become friends and learn to live together in harmony.

Cheers to new beginnings!

  1. Oh Brave One! Please build a widow’s walk on top of your house from which you can still see the sunrise! Meanwhile, you’re right, kittens and ducks – may they keep on keeping on!

  2. Just saw the kitty photos. OMgosh. BTW, your wall will go up just about the same time a garbage transfer station on the river, less than 4 city blocks from my home, will be finished and put into service. Aside from added pollution from trucks, we are all wondering just how much of a chemical/garbage smell will be added to the air. My bedroom windows face east, my little river view is unimpeded. But I love Nor-Easters, when storms turn the weather on its head and huge breezes flow into the bedroom at night. Now…who knows? Did I mention I live a block from the ASPCA? Maybe I’ll have to there and play with the cats!

    1. Oh, my, I hope you don’t get stinky air! That would be way worse than not being able to see sunrises – I can always walk down the road to see another view. You’re brave to enjoy the Nor-Easters – I bet it is fun to feel the breeze of them at night though! Yes, go to ASPCA and pet the cats!

  3. That’s wonderful, Shelley! Cats and ducks. I feel sad that a building will block your beautiful view. It was the same in my birthplace. I don’t the beautiful sunrise there.

    1. Thank you, Winnie. I’m getting more used to it, I’ll just need to walk or drive or run the block to see a better view when I’m feeling blue! I’m sure you find ways to adapt too, you’re so great at finding an optimistic view!
